God promised to bless Abraham

Lesson: The Blessings of Abraham are Yours

1. Story

  • There was an old man named Terah with 3 sons; the eldest was called Abram.
  • Abram married a beautiful woman named Sarai.
  • They went from Ur to Harran, where Terah passed away at 205 years of age.
  • Then God said to Abram: “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessingI will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” (Genesis 12:2-3)
  • Abram was 75 years old when he took Sarai and his nephew Lot with him to Canaan.
  • God gave Abram more promises: "To your offspring I will give this land." (Genesis 12:7)
  • At that time:
    • Abram had no descendants, no household, no significance, no identity
    • Abram meant "exalted Father", but he had no children. His name became a joke.
    • His wife was barren. At that time, childlessness was considered a curse.
  • But God was promising to him who was:
    • Dry & Burnt Out? A land flowing with milk and honey; a land of rest (Heb 4)
    • Feeling Insignificant? He will make him a "great nation"
    • Having to toil hard? He will bless with abundant increase
    • The butt of jokes? He will make his name famous and distinguished
    • Feeling accursed? He will be a blessing and God will bless those who bless him
  • God gave many, many more blessings and promises to Abram.
  • Because of Jesus, we also have a part in Abram's blessings!
    • Galatians 3:14 He redeemed us from the curse of the Law in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.
    • Galatians 3:16  The promises were spoken to Abrahamand to his seed. Scripture does not say "and to seeds," meaning many people, but "and to your seed" meaning one person who is Christ.
    • Galatians 3:29  If you belong to Christ, then you areAbraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
  • Thank you Jesus that all God's promises are "Yes" and "Amen" because of You!

Jesus feeds the 5,000 +++

Lesson: Jesus provides in abundance (Luke 9:10-17)

1. Story:
  • Props: Some bread and “fish” (either fish-shaped biscuits or kueh bahulu) that can be handed out as part of the story
  • Jesus and his disciples went to a town called Bethsaida, which was a remote place. But when the crowds heard he was there, they all followed him.
  • Jesus welcomed them. He spoke to them about God’s kingdom and healed all who needed healing. There were about 5,000 men and many other women and children there … a very big crowd.
  • Late in the afternoon, his disciples came to him and told him to send the crowd away to go find food and a place to stay because it was getting late.
  •  Instead, Jesus asked them to give the crowd something to eat.
  •  There were probably more than 10,000 people! How do you feed so many people?
  • There was a little boy who offered his lunch — 5 loaves of bread and two fish … not enough for so many! The disciples said, “If we were to go buy food for them, it would cost more than half a year’s salary!”
  • But Jesus was not troubled by the big numbers. He just told the disciples: “Have them sit down in groups of about 50 each.”
  •  Then when everyone was seated, Jesus took the five loaves and two fish and, looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them.
  •  Then he passed the bread and fish to his disciples to distribute.
  •  And the more they distributed, the more they seemed to have!
  •  People were eating the bread. People were eating the fish. And they ate and ate until they couldn’t eat any more!
  • The disciples were amazed.
  • As the crowd went off, fully satisfied, the disciples picked up the leftover bread and fish. They put them into baskets, and they filled 12 baskets of leftovers! More than enough!

2. Lesson: Good News for Today!
  • Sometimes we face problems so big that we cannot see how it can be solved. Maybe it’s a big school exam. Or we need something that costs a lot of money. In this case, it was 10 to 15,000 hungry people!
  • Our own supply, like this little boy, is so small — He only had 5 bread and 2 fish … his own lunch. How can he feed such a big crowd?
  • But Jesus does not focus on the lack or the problem. When he holds the bread and fish, the little that they had, He fixed His eyes above on God.
  • God has abundant supply. He is rich. He does not worry about lack.
  • And that supply today is ours because of Jesus. He became poor so that we can be rich.
  • We can look to Jesus and trust Him to provide for our every need. We can let Him use what little we have and see Him transform it. And He not only meets our need but supplies more than we can ever imagine.
  • Memory Verse: <spend some time getting kids to memorise it; u can pin up the verse on cards and then take out one card at a time until they can remember the whole verse>
    • Philippians 4:19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus
  • Let’s pray: Thank you Jesus that when we are faced with difficult situations, we can focus on You instead. We don’t have to see our lack. We can see Your supply. We can trust You to meet all our needs, according to the richest of Your glory in Christ Jesus. In Your name, I pray Amen.

3.  Activity ideas:
  • Father’s Day thanksgiving
    •  Have kids share one thing they are thankful for about their dad. (Be sensitive if a kid does not have dad)
    • Tell them as much as their earthly dads love them, their Heavenly Father loves them even more. And if there are things their dads can’t do, their Heavenly Father can.
  • Father’s Day craft
    • Choose a simple craft and have the kids write “Thank you Dad for ______________”
    • Origami shirt

Jesus' Miracle: Jesus provides in abundance (Luke 9:10-17)

1.       Where did Jesus and his disciples go? What do you think they intended to do?
They went to the town of Bethsaida. The disciples had just returned from share the good news about Jesus in surrounding villages. Jesus probably wanted to spend some time with them to rest.

2.       The crowds followed and found them though. How did Jesus react?
He welcomed them. Spoke to them about God’s kingdom. Healed those who were sick.

3.       When the disciples wanted to send the people to find food in the afternoon, Jesus asked them to give the crowd something to eat. What were the disciples’ response? (See also John 6:7-9)
So many people (5,000 men + women + children). Only five loaves and two fish. Take more than half a year’s wages to buy bread for everyone to have a bite.

4. What were they focusing on?
The disciples focused on the problem and their lack.

5.       Jesus already had in mind what He was going to do. He had the people seated in groups of fifty each. What did he do next?
Take the five loaves and two fish, looked up to heaven, gave thanks and broke them.

6.       What was the result?
Everyone had more than enough to eat and were satisfied. The disciples also picked up twelve baskets of leftover pieces.

7.       What can we learn from this lesson?
  •  Don’t look at the problem or your lack
  • Look to the source, God,  and give thanks

Memory Verse: Philippians 4:19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus

Do not Worry (Pt 2)

Lesson: God takes care of the flowers. God takes care of me!
Luke 12:27-31. Matt 6:28-34

1. Intro: Show pictures of King Solomon and/or models in beautiful dresses
  • Take a look at these pictures of these beautiful clothes.
  • Do you know that all these splendid clothes needed a lot of money and effort to be made? All the silk and sequins and satin and sashes.
  • But do you know that they cannot compare with the flowers of the field, with the beauty of God’s creation?

2. Facts aboutMalaysian flowers
<use pictures or real flowers etc to illustrate. Key idea is to bring the lesson down to everyday things that they see in their gardens/parks, so that every time they see a flower, they are reminded of what Jesus says — that their Father takes care of them too>
  • Aren’t we blessed with so many different wonderful flowers every day? Each one is so beautifully coloured, with unique shapes, sizes, textures.
  • God designed them so intricately, and they don’t have to do anything. All they do is just grow naturally and let their beauty shine forth.
  • Do you know that each flower doesn’t live forever?
    • The hibiscus, eg, blooms in the morning and wilts in the evening.
    • The rafflesia takes 6-9 months to bud but then decomposes after 2-3 days of blooming.
  • Yet God didn’t take short cuts with them. He didn’t say, “Because they only last a short while, I’ll not spend so much time on them.” Instead, He makes each of them special in their own way.

3. We are more important than these flowers
  • Jesus tells us to think about these wild flowers —they do not sew their clothes or worry about what to wear today. Yet God takes care of them and dresses them beautifully.
  • In the same way God takes care of the flowers and the grass, He takes care of you and me, and He knows what we need.
  • That’s why we don’t have to worry about:
    • What we eat
    • What we drink
    • What we wear
    • Tomorrow
  • Jesus tells us to “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you.” Matt 6:33 (Memory Verse)
  • When we accept Jesus, He covers us with His righteousness —like wearing a splendid robe, better than any other fashion out there. Because of this righteousness, we qualify for all of God’s blessings and provisions.
  • So we just need to focus on Jesus and trust in Him, and all the things we need — food, drink, clothes, money — will be taken care of by Him.
  • We don’t have to chase after all these things that the world chases after. We just “chase” after Jesus, and all these things will follow.

4. Activity Ideas
  • Craft: Anything flower-themed with the words “God takes care of the flowers. God takes care of me” or memory verse on petals or around. E.g. Prepare some cut flowers and green paper cut in shapes of leaves. Get kids to stick the flowers on the green paper and write the words/memory verse on the green paper.

Do not Worry (Pt 1)

Lesson: God feeds the birds. And I am more valuable than birds.

1.  Intro: Fun facts about birds or Fun facts about ravens <use pictures, soft toys etc to illustrate; or as pop quiz>
     e.g.
  • The raven is the largest bird of the crow family: it is 2x heavier than a common crow at 1.3kg
  •  Ravens can live 40 years in the wild and 70 in captivity
  •  Ravens can soar high above the trees and are capable of aerial stunts
  •  Ravens can live from deserts to forests and cliffs, nesting in either stick-made nests or rock cavities
  • Ravens feed on almost anything — fruits, seeds, nuts, fish, carrion, small animals, food remains and garbage. They even dig on snow to inspect plastic bags with waste. They also follow fishers and hunters for days to “glean” from their hunts
  • Ravens are considered one of the most intelligent birds in puzzle solving or performing series of complex actions, such as counting or opening a zipped bag
  •  They often get other animals to do their work for them — e.g. making calls to attract wolves and foxes to break the carcass of a dead animal so that they can access the meat inside
  •  Ravens have different dialects according to the area they are in
  • In the Bible, the raven was the first animal to fly or leave Noah's Ark, to see if the flood had died down.
  •  Ravens are mentioned in 7 verses of the Bible

2. Story: (Luke 12:22-26Matt 6:25-27)
  • Do you know that the ravens/birds do not sow or plant crops? They don’t reap the harvest? They don’t have storerooms where they keep their seeds?
  • How then do they survive? God take care of them. He makes sure that they can find food when they need to.
  • Just as God takes care of the raven/birds, He takes care of you and me.
  • After all we are worth so much more than ravens. We are more important than all the birds in the air. Just as God provides for the ravens, He provides for you and me.
  • That’s why Jesus tells us not to worry:
    • about our life
    • about what we will eat
    • about our body
    • about what we will wear
  • Many things in life are out of our control. Worrying about them will not change anything. Jesus tells us that no matter how much we worry, we can’t add an hour to our life. Our lives are in God’s hands, and He alone is in charge.
  • We don’t worry about whether our mummy knows when to go to the market to buy food. We don’t worry about when our daddy gets his pay cheque and whether he has paid the bills. We trust them to take care of us. In the same way, we can trust God to take care of us all the time!
  • Memory Verse: Luke 12:24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!

Lesson: We are more important to God than birds

     A.      Intro: Fun facts about birds pop quiz: Who am I?

  • I am the most common bird on the planet. Chicken
  • I am a bird that doesn’t fly. Penguin, ostrich, dodo
  • I am the only bird without wings. Kiwi
  • I lay the world’s smallest egg. Hummingbird
  • I lay the world’s largest egg. Ostrich
  • When I get excited, my head changes colour. Turkey
  • I can fly backwards. Hummingbird
  • I don’t build my own nests. I use other birds’. Cuckoo
  • I am considered the most intelligent bird in puzzle solving and performing a series of complex actions. Raven

Let’s read Luke 12:22-26 and Matt 6:25-27.

1. What are some of the common worries Jesus mentioned?
Our life, what we will eat, our body, what we will wear

2. What are some of your worries? Why do you worry about these things?
<Open for discussion>

3. What can we accomplish by worrying? What does Jesus say we cannot accomplish by worrying?
Nothing. Jesus said we cannot add a single hour to our life by worrying. Thus we shouldn’t waste time worrying.

4.  What lesson can we learn from the birds?
The birds do not sow or reap, have no storeroom or barn (preparation or hoarding for fear of lack in the future) yet God feeds them, takes care of them.

5. What assurance do we have?
We are worth so much more than ravens, than all the birds in the air. Just as God provides for the ravens, He provides for you and me.
Many things in life are out of our control. Worrying about them will not change anything. Our lives are in God’s hands, and He alone is in charge.

We don’t worry about whether our mummy knows when to go to the market to buy food. We don’t worry about when our daddy gets his pay cheque and whether he has paid the bills. We trust them to take care of us. In the same way, we can trust God to take care of us all the time!

Memory Verse: Luke 12:24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!
