Abraham & the Child of Laughter

Lesson: Nothing is too difficult for God (Gen 11-21)

1.       Game: Laughing Game
Play a simple laughing game; modify as you see fit.
  • Mrs Mumble
    • Everyone sits in a circle. First person turns to the one on the right and asks “Have you seen Mrs Mumble?”without showing his/her teeth or laughing.
    • The next person has to say, “No. I’ll ask my neighbor.” And then ask the following person the same question without showing teeth or laughing.
  • Ha Ha game (for younger kids only)
    • Get the kids to lie on their backs, with their heads resting on another player’s stomach. Tell the kids that the aim of the game is not to laugh at all. The first kid has to say somberly “Ha”, then the next one says “Ha ha”, the third one says “Ha ha ha” and so on. The person who does not laugh at all wins.

 2.       Story:
  • The last time we learnt that God gave many promises to Abram.
  • One of the promises was that Abram will have many children, like the stars in the sky and the sand on the shores.
  • But as many years passed (24 years since God first called Abram), Abram and his wife, Sarai, still did not have any children.
  • Gen 17: Then one day, when Abram was 99 years old, God appeared to him and told him that yes, he will still have many children. In fact, God wanted to change his name to Abraham, which means “father of many nations”.
  • And his wife will now be called “Sarah” — she will be the mother of nations and kings!
  • Sarah was a beautiful woman, but she was also very old now. She was almost 90 years old! How many of you have grandmothers who are 90 years old?
  • But God said that Sarah will have a child.
  • The thought of that made Abraham fall down on his face and laugh!
  • Gen 18: Another day, two men visited Abraham, and he prepared a meal for them.
  • After they had eaten, they asked Abraham, “Where is your wife, Sarah?”
  • “There, in the tent,” he said.
  • One of the man said, “I will return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.”
  • Now Sarah was listening from inside the tent. She couldn’t believe what the man said, so she laughed to herself. “We’re both so old; how can we have a son?”
  • The man said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’ Is anything too hard for the LORD?
  • Gen 21: True enough, nothing is too hard for God. One year later, Sarah gave birth to a baby! They named him “Isaac”, which means “son of laughter.”
  • She said, “God has brought me laughter! Everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.”

3.       Lesson: Good News for Today!
  • When all else fails, know that God is all powerful and NOTHING is too difficult for Him.
  • Romans 4:18 says, “Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, ‘So shall your offspring be.’”
  • Whatever problem you may face, trust that God will always keep His promises.
  • Isaac brought much joy to Abraham and Sarah.
  • The good news is that through Isaac, God brought another special baby in an even more miraculous way. This baby’s name was Jesus, and His birth brought lots of laughter and joy to the whole world! Praise the Lord!
  • Memory Verse: “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” Genesis 21:6

4.       Activity ideas:
  • Song: Ah Lord God (Nothing is too difficult for you)
  • Craft:
    • Something smiley face related, e.g. a happy face mask, with memory verse “God has brought me laughter.” (Genesis 21:6)
    • Other ideas: Toothy PuppetSmiling Craft

Jesus raises Jairus' daughter

Lesson: Jesus gives life (Luke 8:40-56; Mark 5:21-42)
1. Story:
  • Tell the story of Jesus raising Jairus' daughter from Luke 8:40-56 and Mark 5:21-42.
  • Last week we learned about a woman who had been bleeding for 12 years. When she touched Jesus, He was actually on His way to see a little girl.
  • This little girl was 12 years old, and she was very sick.
  • Her father’s name was Jairus. He was a synagogue leader — a ruler of the synagogue.
  • Even though he was an important man, when his daughter was sick, he knew that only Jesus could help.
  • So the moment Jesus got off the boat, Jairus fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him. “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.”
    • Jairus knew that Jesus had the power to heal his daughter, and he believed that she will be healed. This is called faith.
  • Jesus went with him. Along the way, He was “interrupted” by the woman who was bleeding for 12 years.
  • For Jairus, it must have an anxious time because Jesus stopped to talk to the woman while his daughter was dying.
  • But perhaps his faith was strengthened when he heard the woman’s testimony.
  • Then some people came from Jairus house and said, “You daughter is dead. Why bother the teacher anymore?”
    • To these people, Jesus was just a “teacher”.
  • Jesus assured Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
  • Jesus brought Peter, James and John with him to Jairus’ house.
  • At the house, there were many people crying and wailing loudly.
  • Jesus said, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.”
  • But the people laughed at him.
  • Jesus put the people out of the house, leaving only his disciples and Jairus and his wife.
  • They went into the room where the girl was lying.
  • Taking her by the hand, Jesus said to her, “Talitha Koum!” (which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”
  • Immediately, the girl stood up and began to walk around.
  • Jesus told those present not to let anyone know about this and to give the girl something to eat.

2. Lesson:
  • Like the woman who was bleeding for 12 years, Jairus also spoke out in faith when he said, “Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.”
  • When the woman who was bleeding interrupted Jesus, when the people from Jairus’ house told him that his daughter was dead, when the wailers and mourners were crying in the house … despite these circumstances, Jesus still called Jairus to believe in Him.
  • When all hope seems gone, no matter what we are going through, we can continue to speak in faith and believe in Jesus. We can hear what Jesus said, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
  • Jesus is Lord over everything, even death!
  • Let’s pray: Thank you Jesus that when we are faced with difficult situations, You are there with us. When things seem hopeless, You call us not to fear and to believe in You. Help us to learn to trust You more each day and to speak life and faith, according to Your promises. In Your name, I pray Amen.

3.       Activity ideas:
  • Worksheets:
    • Crossword
    • Word Search
    • Craft: Girl Finger Puppet
      • Print out drawing on card/paper. Get kids to colour. Help them to cut out the holes for the fingers to go through as the girl’s legs.

Jesus heals the woman with an issue of blood
Lesson: A touch from Jesus heals (Luke 8:43-48; Mark 5:25-34)

1. Icebreaker:
  • Who touched me? Have the children sit in a circle. One person sits in the middle and is blindfolded. Children will take turns as the teacher quietly points to each one, to go to the child in the middle and TOUCH that children and quietly run back to the circle. Then the blindfold can be removed and the child can try to guess who TOUCHED him/her. If he guesses it correctly, then that child goes to the middle to be blindfolded, etc.
  • Touch the TeacherBlindfold the teacher and let children take turns touching the teacher’s back. The teacher will have to guess what part of the child's body touched the teacher's back - such as a finger, a nose, an elbow, a toe, an ear, etc! Can also let kids be the ones to guess who touched them.

2. Story:
  • Last lesson, we learnt about Jesus delivering the evil spirits out of a man in Gerasenes.
  • After Jesus left and came back to the other side of the lake, He was quickly summoned to heal a little girl who was dying.
  • A big crowd followed Jesus as He walked. In the crowd was a woman.
  • The Bible doesn’t put her name, but we know that she had been bleeding for 12 years. How many of you are 12 years old? 12 years is a long time to be bleeding.
  • Besides the discomfort and pain she might have been going through, this woman had to keep away from society, as she was bleeding and considered “unclean”.
  • Do you remember who else were considered “unclean” in Jewish society? Lepers
  • This woman went to many doctors. She spent a lot of money. But instead, she got worse! Nobody could heal her.
  • But she heard there was someone who could heal her — Jesus.
  • So even though she was not supposed to be out in public, she decided to go see Jesus. She thought to herself, “If I just touch His clothes, I will be healed!”
  • So she crept up behind Jesus and touched the edge of His long cloak.
  • Immediately, her bleeding stopped! And the woman knew that she had been completely healed.
  • Even though there were so many people around Him, Jesus also realised something had happened. He turned around and asked, “Who touched me? I know that power has gone out from me.”
  • The woman knew she couldn’t hide. She came and fell at Jesus’ feet. And she told Him and everyone there what had happened to her. She testified how God had healed her.
  • Then Jesus said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.

3. Lesson:
  • When all hope is gone, this woman had faith that Jesus could heal her. She confessed it with her mouth, “If I just touch His clothes, I will be healed.”
  • We, too, can exercise faith in what we say. Speak out God’s truth and promises, even when things may seem hopeless. We, too, can reach out in faith and receive our healing and miracle.
  • When we meet Jesus, we cannot remain the same. We will be transformed.
    • Healing takes place
    • We are given a new identity — no longer just “woman” but “daughter”
    • We have His peace
  • Like the woman, all that is left for us to do is to tell others what God has done for us.
  • Let’s pray: Thank you Jesus that a touch from You is all we need. You have the power to heal us. You have the power to make us Your sons and daughters. Thank you for loving us and working in us. In Your name, I pray Amen.

4. Activity ideas:

  • Craft: Handprints
    • Get kids to trace their palm on multi-coloured paper/card.
    • Cut out the handprint.
    • Write: A touch of Jesus heals on the palm

Jesus' Miracle: Jesus heals the woman with an issue of blood

Leader's Guide

Read Luke 8:43-49, Mark 5:25-34
1.       After Jesus returned from the other side of the lake, he was asked to go to heal a very sick girl. As he was on his way, he was surrounded by a great crowd. Who was in the crowd?
A woman who had been bleeding for 12 years.

2.       What were some of the physical, financial and social sufferings she had gone through?
Physical: Bleeding for 12 years. Got worse.
Financial: Spent all she had on many doctors.
Social: Considered “unclean” and not allowed to be in contact with other people.
[Who else in Jesus’ time were considered “unclean”? Lepers]

3.       When all hope was gone, the woman heard about Jesus and faith arose. What did she say to herself?
“If I just touch His clothes, I will be healed.”

4.       What happened when she touched the hem of Jesus’ cloak?
Immediately her bleeding stopped, and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.

5.       No one else saw what she did, but her touch did not go unnoticed by Jesus. He turned around and asked who touched Him because He felt power go out from Him. What did the woman do?
She came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told them why she had touched Jesus and how she had been instantly healed. (She testified of Jesus’ goodness to her)

6.       What did Jesus say to her?
“Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”

  • When all hope is gone, this woman had faith that Jesus could heal her. She confessed it with her mouth, “If I just touch His clothes, I will be healed.” We, too, can exercise faith in what we say. Speak out God’s truth and promises, even when things may seem hopeless. We, too, can reach out in faith and receive our healing and miracle.
  • When we meet Jesus, we cannot remain the same. We will be transformed.
  • Like the woman, all that is left for us to do is to tell others what God has done for us.

Jesus heals the centurion's servant

Lesson: Jesus has authority over sicknesses

1.  Game: Simon Says

2. Story:
  • Tell the story of Jesus healing the centurion's servant from Luke 7:1-10.
  • Last week we learned about Jesus teaching on the mountain. After Jesus finished teaching, he went to Capernaum.
  • A centurion heard that Jesus was in town. A centurion is a very important man. He had about 100 soldiers or more under his command.
  • One of the centurion’s favourite servants was sick and about to die. The centurion had heard about Jesus and knew Jesus could heal. He sent some Jewish elders to ask Jesus to come and heal the servant.
  • The Jewish elders pleaded with Jesus, telling them that the centurion was a good man who loves the Jewish nation and built their synagogue. So Jesus went with them.
  • When he was near the house, the centurion sent some friends to Jesus to say: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof.  I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.”
  • The centurion understood what it meant to have authority because he had soldiers under him. He knew if he tells his soldiers to go, they will go; if he tells them to come, they will come; if he tells them to do this, they will do it.
    • Just like the “Simon Says” game. When “Simon” gives an order, everybody follows and obeys.
  • The centurion recognised Jesus’ authority over sicknesses and diseases. He trusted that if Jesus says the servant will be healed, he’ll be healed. He didn’t even need to step into the house.
  • Jesus was amazed at the centurion’s faith. He told the crowd following him that “I have not found such great faith, even in Israel.”
  • And when the centurion’s friends returned to the house, they found the servant completely well!

3. Lesson: Good News for today!
  • Indeed, Jesus is a man of authority. At one word, at His name, sicknesses and demons flee.
  • And when Jesus died on the cross and rose again, He demonstrated His power and authority over sin and death. Jesus himself declared, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” (Matt 28:18) — Memory Verse
  • The best part is that He has given us the same authority and power through His Holy Spirit — “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you” (Acts 1:8).
  • So as children of the living God, you and I have the authority to speak Jesus’ healing to those who are sick. We can tell the sicknesses and diseases to be gone in Jesus’ name, because Jesus took those sicknesses on the cross 2000 years ago. And when we tell them to be gone, they will be gone!
  • Is any of you sick today? Put your hand on the part of your body that’s not feeling well.
  • Or do you know anyone sick today? Think of that person.
  • Let’s speak with Jesus’ authority to the sickness: Sickness (pain, runny nose, cough, headache etc) — you don’t belong in this body! You’ve been nailed to the cross 2000 years ago. So be gone in Jesus’ name. By Jesus’ stripes, I’ve been healed. Amen!

4. Activity Ideas:
  • Quiz: Divide kids into 2 teams and get them to answer some questions on the story today.
E.g. Where was Jesus? Who was sick? Who was sent first to Jesus? What did the Centurion do for the Jewish people? etc
    •  To answer, the kid has to put up his/her hand and say “Yes Sir”. Those who don’t say “Yes Sir” or who shout out the answer will be disqualified.
  • Craft: Roman Centurion Paper Doll
  • Crossword Puzzle:

Jesus heals the bent-over woman

Lesson: We are more important to God than ox and goats

1. Intro: OUT OF SHAPE WALK AROUND: Tell children to walk slowly and quietly (NO running or shouting) as if they are bent out of shape. And when the teacher calls out “FREEZE”, they have to freeze in their best “bent” pose.
Do it 2-3 times, depending on class response and control.

2. Story: “Let me tell you about a woman who was bent like this for a very, very long time.”
(based on
Luke 13:10-17)
  • Imagine: for 18 years, this woman had an evil spirit and was bent up. 18 years is a long time — how many of you have 18-year-old brothers or sisters? Imagine being bent up for so long.
  • Jesus did a wonderful thing — He delivered the evil spirit from a woman and healed her so that she could finally stand up straight.
  • She was so happy — she stood tall and praised God! Wouldn’t you be happy if Jesus healed you?
  • But some people weren’t happy. The religious officials were unhappy. They were unhappy because Jesus broke the Sabbath laws by healing the woman. You were not supposed to work on the Sabbath. And healing was considered work, so it was illegal. Jesus should have healed her on a Sunday, a Monday, a Tuesday, a Wednesday … any day except Saturday, the Sabbath day.
  • Jesus asked them a question: If you have an ox or a donkey that’s kept in the stall, wouldn’t you let them out to drink some water on the Sabbath? Of course you would.
  • Now here was a woman that has been kept captive by Satan for 18 years. Surely she is more important that the ox and donkey? Surely she can be set free even on a Sabbath.
  • To the Israelites in that time, their livestock (ox, donkey, sheep, cattle) were important to them because that’s their livelihood, their income. So they will take care of them even on the Sabbath day.
  • But Jesus is greater than all the rules. And to God, we are so much more important to Him than all these animals. So God wants to show His love and goodness to us, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Isn't God so good? That's why we praise Him!

3. Activity Ideas
  • WorksheetWordsearchCrossword
  • Craft: Use a picture of donkey and ox with the words “I am more important to God than the donkey and ox” or “God loves me ALL the time”. Kids can colour or stick pix onto a card.
