Parable of the Ten Minas

1. Lesson:

  • Tell the Parable of the Ten Minas based on Luke 19:11-27.
  •  The noble man who was made king is Jesus
    •  Jesus wanted to prepare His disciples that He was not going to be “king” immediately (as many thought He would)
    •  He would have to go to the cross first, then back to heaven before returning one day
    •  But in His absence, and until His return, He leaves us with valuable treasures (minas, talents) — the gift of His righteousness and the blessings that accompany it, which we can all receive by grace, through faith
  • There are three other groups of people in this parable
    •  The first and second servants: When we accept this gift of Jesus’ life will see it bear fruit in our lives — some five times, some ten times
      • Our work/studies, families, ministries prosper
      •  We are able to bless others because of all that Christ has blessed us with
      •  The word we sow multiplies
      •  We live faithful, victorious and abundant lives in Christ
      •  We enter into the joy of the Lord
    •  The last servant:
      • If we take this gift but do not understand who God is, we will live in fear, doubt and unfruitfulness.
      • We will think God is a hard master who is ruthless and unfair
      • We think God is always waiting to punish us for our mistakes
      • We don’t use the gifts that He has blessed us with
      • We rely on our own strength, efforts and works to try to please God, and end up empty
    •  The subjects who rejected the noble man as king:
      • Those who reject Christ as king and His gift of righteousness will fail to enjoy His gift of eternal life
  • Conclusion:
    •  Know who God is — have the right picture of Him. He has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in Christ Jesus. He’s not a hard master out to get us. He wants to rejoice with us and call us “good and faithful”.
    •  Know the treasure we have in Christ — don’t hide it away. Use it. Enjoy it. Share it with others. Bless others with it.
    •  Jesus is coming back again — those who do not receive Him as their Saviour and King will be left out of His kingdom. Let’s share with our friends the good news of our Lord Jesus Christ!

Jesus Enters Jerusalem

Lesson: Jesus is our King of Salvation and Righteousness
1. Story:

2. Lesson:
  • Jesus had been preparing his disciples for His death. He knew that after He got to Jerusalem, He would be arrested and crucified.
  • Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem was a time of celebration because it was part of God’s plan of salvation, and righetousness.
  • Celebration: Jesus is King
    • When Jesus entered Jerusalem, his disciples and the crowd began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice while waving palm leaves: “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the LORD! Hosanna in the highest!”
    • Whether they understood it or not, the crowds were praising Jesus as their king.
    • The Pharisees weren’t very happy that the crowds were praising Jesus … whom they saw as only a man. But Jesus told them, even if the crowds didn’t praise Him, the stones would cry out as creation cannot deny the fact that Jesus was God.
    • Imagine the stones on the road shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Hosanna!”
  • Jesus is our Salvation
    • The Prophet Zechariah had prophesied about it in Zech 9: “ Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you;
    • He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.
    • Jesus’ coming into Jerusalem was a time of celebration because He was going to bring God’s salvation to His people — Jesus had to come to take our place so that we can have His life in us. He died so that we could live.
  • Jesus is our Righteousness (optional for younger class)
    • There was another prophecy back in Genesis that talks about the coming of the Saviour. Before Jacob died, he blessed his 12 sons. For Judah, the ancestor of Jesus, he said:  10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes; And to Him shall be the obedience of the people. 11 Binding his donkey to the vine, And his donkey’s colt to the choice vine, He washed his garments in wine, And his clothes in the blood of grapes. (Gen 49:10-11)
    • Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, and the people put their clothes on the donkey and on the ground as he passed by.
    • In Jacob’s blessing, he speaks of the donkey being tied to the choice vine, the best vine. This vine if Jesus (John 15) and the new life He gives us when we are tied to Him.
    • Jacob also spoke about clothes being washed in the blood of grapes. Our clothes — our own “righteousness” — are filthy rags, torn and dirty. This blood of grapes refer to Jesus’ blood — He washes us clean and clothes us in robes of righteousness (Isaiah 61:10).
    • So let’s throw down our own clothes, our filthy rags, and let Jesus wash us clean and call us righteous!
  • Conclusion:
    • When Jesus entered Jerusalem, He knew He was going to be killed. He didn’t go in reluctantly or hesitantly. He went in boldly, to the cheers and cries of many. Because He knew that the victory was His already — salvation and redemption has come!
    • And like the crowds in Jesus’ time, and the stones that would have cried out, let’s praise Him and worship Him for He is our King who loves us so much!

Jesus clears the temple

Lesson: Jesus is the Ultimate Sacrifice and the New Temple
1. Lesson:
  • Tell the account of Jesus at the Temple based on John2:13-22 andMark 11:17
  • After Jesus went into Jerusalem on the donkey, one of the first things He did was to go to the temple.
  • The temple was where the Jews would go to offer their sacrifices to God in worship and for their sins.
  • But when Jesus was at the temple, what did He see? He saw people selling cattle, sheep and doves and exchanging money. Someone who wanted to offer sacrifice at the temple would have to change their money into special “temple currency” before they could buy the animals for sacrifice.
  • That usually means that they’d have to pay more than normal in order to fulfill their religious duties. It also meant that people were making money out of people’s worship, and those who could not afford the special temple currency would not be able to offer their sacrifices.
  • Jesus didn’t like it. Jesus described what they were doing as a “market” and a “den of robbers.”
  • So He made a whip of cords and drove all these people out, together with their sheep and cattle and doves. He overturned the money changers’ tables and scattered the coins.
  • For All Nations: No Hindrance
    • Jesus said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’?”
    •  Jesus was quoting Isaiah 56, which spoke of Gentiles (non-Jews) coming to worship Him:
    • By putting their own rules and making money out of people’s worship, the moneychangers and merchants were making it difficult and stopping people from coming to worship God.
    • God had intended that every person, from ALL nations, have full access to Him. They would be able to worship Him freely and have fellowship with Him.
  • The Ultimate Sacrifice, The New Temple
    • <can use blocks/lego/Uno stacko to build a temple building. then destroy it and explain that today, Jesus is the new temple and we are all in it>
    •  At that time, there were certain restrictions on temple worship according to the Mosaic law. People like us — gentiles, non-Jews —could only worship in the outer area. Only Jews could go into the temple, and only the priests could offer the sacrifices on their behalf.
    • This is because SIN still separated man from God.  And sinful man could not simply come to the holy God.
    •  When Jesus was asked by the Jews to show why He had authority to chase everyone out of the temple, He answered, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”
    • At that time, nobody understood. They thought He meant the physical temple they were standing in, which took 46 years to build.
    • But Jesus was talking about His body — that He will die, and rise up again after 3 days. And He did!
    • After Jesus rose from the dead, His body would be thenew temple. The old temple and its many Old Covenant sacrifices were not needed any more.
    • Through His death, the ultimate sacrifice, He signed a New Covenant with God on our behalf.  He paid for our sins and removed it from us.

    • Today, we can all be part of Christ’s body and have apersonal relationship with God — we no longer had to go to a temple building to worship Him and fellowship with Him. We can be in Christ, and God’s spirit can be in us. God lives with us and walks with us, His people.
      • 1 Cor 3:16 Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you?
      • 1 Cor 12:27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.
      • 2 Cor 6:16 For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said:  “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.”
  • Conclusion:
    •  When Jesus cleansed the temple, He was showing that:
      • Everyone, from all nations, can come freely to worship God
      • Jesus would be the ultimate Sacrifice and the New Temple — we are now in Him and God’s spirit lives in us.

Know our Covenant Benefits — David & Goliath

1. Story:
  • Tell the story of David & Goliath based on 1 Sam 19.
  • God deals with His people through covenants
    • Covenant = promises between 2 parties to become 1 (e.g. a marriage) — “you = me”; whoever touches you, touches me; till death do us part.
    •  The Israelites were part of the covenant God made with Abraham. They were circumcised — a mark of the covenant. They belonged to God. But sometimes they forgot that.
  •  The Israelites forgot
    • Goliath was a tall, strong man. He was the champion of the Philistines — Israel’s enemy. Day and night, he’d shout threats at the Israelite army. “This day I defy the armies of Israel! Give me a man and let us fight each other.”
    • Every time Goliath roared, the Israelites were terrified. They forgot that they had a bigger Champion on their side — God.
  • David remembered
    • When David heard Goliath’s threats, he said, “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
    • Goliath said he was defying the “armies of Israel”, but David knew he was really trying to defy the “armies of the living God”.
    • David told Saul, “Don’t lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him”. David remembered all that God had done for him in the past — when he was faced with the lion and the bear. And he knew that God will go with him to face Goliath.
  • The battle is the Lord’s
    • David didn’t just go into the field with his slingshot and five stones. He went with the Lord, and it was the Lord who gave him the victory.
    • David defeated and killed Goliath. The Philistines turned and ran. The Israelites chased them and plundered their camp .

2. Lesson:
  • We are people of the New Covenant
    • When Jesus died, He put an end to the Old Covenant and started the New Covenant.
    •  This covenant was cut between God and Jesus — so it cannot fail.
    • When we put our trust in Jesus, we are included in this covenant.

  • When we forget who’s on our side, we live in fear; when we remember, we live by faith!
    • When we are afraid or faced with a difficult challenge, always look back to the Cross — when Jesus won the greatest victory of all!
  • Jesus won the victory for us. We are more than conquerors!
    • Just like the Israelites plundered the Philistines because of what David did, we can receive all the benefits of the New Covenant because of what Jesus did on the cross. So we do not need to be afraid and can walk in victory!

3. Activity Suggestion
  • Pin the stone on the giant

  • Memory verse activity:
    • Memory Verse: Romans 8:37 No, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
