Peter denies Jesus

1. Story (based on Luke 22:31-3454-62)
  • Last week we learned that Jesus was in the garden of Gethsemane. He obeyed the Father’s will and He gave Himself willingly to those who came to arrest Him.
  • Simon Peter, his disciple, was with him.
  • Earlier at the Passover meal, Jesus had prophesied that His disciples would desert him.
  • But Peter boasted to Jesus, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.” He thought he could do anything, and he was proud. He thought he was willing and able to go all the way for Jesus, even if it meant going to prison or to die for him … even if ALL the other disciples fell away, he would not. Peter was boasting in himself!
  • Jesus told him, though, that “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny 3 times that you know me.”
  • In fact, when Jesus was arrested, Peter was the one who swung his sword to cut off the High Priest’s servant’s ear. He thought he was being brave and strong. Peter was acting in his flesh.
  • But when Jesus was led away to the house of the High Priest, Peter followed … at a distance. There was a fire in the middle of the courtyard, and people were sitting around it. Peter went close to the fire and sat down.
  • A servant girl saw him there. She looked closely at him and said,“This man was with Jesus.” But Peter denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him.”
  • Later on, someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” Peter replied. “Man, I am not!”
  • About an hour later another person said, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”  Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
  • Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. Jesus turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”
  • And he went outside and wept bitterly. Peter failed.
2. Lesson:
  • When we boast in ourselves, we think we are better than everyone else, even God.
  • Peter wanted to die for Jesus — in His place. He thought that was the right thing to do. But his death would not have accomplished anything. Only Jesus’ death would have any effect.
  • Earlier in the dinner, Peter wanted to wash Jesus’ feet too. He thought it was the humble and right thing for a disciple to wash His master’s feet. But he didn’t realize that only Jesus could wash us clean. We cannot wash ourselves or Him clean on our own.
  • We should realize that it’s not what we can do, but what Jesus has done for us. If we boast, let us boast in the Lord! (2 Cor 10:17)
  • When we act in the flesh, we don’t flow with the Spirit.
    • Peter was all full of bravado and gungho-ness. He thought he could help Jesus by cutting off the servant’s ear. He thought he could help Jesus escape from his captors.
    • But Jesus touched the servant’s ear and healed it. Jesus was following the Spirit’s leading. He told God that He was obeying God’s will, not His own.
    • Because Jesus died, rose again and went to heaven, He gave us His Holy Spirit to live with us forever. Before we act or react, let us listen to the Spirit. Ask God, “Please teach me what to do. Help me to act according to Your will, not mine.”

  • When we fail, Jesus helps us up in love.
    • Jesus told Peter that He was praying for him.
    • Jesus knew Peter would be tested and Satan will try to shake him. Jesus knew that despite Peter’s brave words, he will deny him 3 times.
    • But Jesus was ready to restore Peter back in love. He was ready to catch Peter and help him turn back and strengthen his brothers. He forgave him.
    • When we fail, Jesus is there to catch us and to help us back. He will never let us go!

  • Three times Peter said, "I am not." Three times Jesus said, "I am He." (John 18)
    • What we cannot do, He can.
    • We cannot fulfill God's standards. We cannot pay for our own sins. We fail and fall.
    • And in all these weaknesses, Jesus is strong. What we cannot, He can. Who we are not, He is.
    • So don't look to ourselves. Fix our eyes on Jesus — the Lamb of God who came to take away the sins of the world!

Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane

Lesson: Jesus obeyed the Father's Will

1. Lesson (based on Luke 22:39-53)

  • Last week we learned about Jesus celebrating the Passover meal with his disciples. Anyone remembers what Jesus did after the meal? (broke bread and gave the cup) What does the bread and cup signify for us? (broken body and shed blood of Jesus)
  • After the dinner, Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. His disciples followed Him.
  • When they reached the garden, He told them to stay there and pray, while He went a short distance away by Himself.
  • Jesus obeyed the Father’s Will and took the cup of punishment for us
    • Then Jesus went on His knees and prayed. “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me.”
    • Jesus knew He was going to die soon. He knew it would be a terrible death. He would suffer and be in pain. He would be taking on God’s punishment and judgment for the sins of the whole world. He would be separated from the Father.
    • This prompted Him to ask God if it’s possible for Him to not take this cup of judgment.
    • He was in so much anguish that His sweat dropped to the ground like drops of blood!
    • But thankfully for all of us, Jesus continued to say “Yet not My will, but Yours be done.”
    • In the beginning of creation, there was Adam in the Garden of Eden. Adam disobeyed God’s instructions to eat from the Tree of the knowledge of good and evil. (Gen 3) He wanted to be like God and make decisions on his own about what was good/evil. Because of His disobedience, sin entered the world and we were all separated from God.
    • In this Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus was fully man yet also fully God. But He subjected Himself not to His own will, but to the will of God. And because of His obedience, our sins could all be paid for and we can be reconciled with God!
    • TQ Jesus for obeying the Father and taking the cup of punishment for us!
  • Jesus was alone so that we would never have to be alone
    • Jesus’ disciples followed Him to the garden. Jesus told them to wait and pray.
    • But when He went to see them, they were fast asleep!
    • Those closest to Him were not there to support Him! Only God’s angels came to minister to Him in His time of greatest need.
    • And to make matters worse, one of His own disciples, Judas Iscariot, came bringing a crowd of soldiers to arrest Jesus. As a sign, Judas tried to give Jesus a kiss on the cheek, so the soldiers knew who to arrest. Your own friend, turning you over to your enemies, and insulting you with a kiss! How do you think Jesus felt?
    • But Jesus did not try to run away. He did not attack the soldiers. One of His disciples, Peter, actually cut off the ear of the High Priest’s servant, but Jesus touched the man’s ear and healed him!
    • Jesus stepped forward and allowed Himself to be arrested, out of love for you and me!
    • TQ Jesus for offering yourself willingly for us!

  • Jesus offered Himself willingly for us
    • When Judas came with the soldiers, one of Jesus’ disciples, Peter, struck the servant of the High Priest and cut off his right ear!
    • Jesus could have taken opportunity of that moment to run away and hide. Instead, He reprimanded His disciple and touched the servant’s ear and healed him!
    • In fact, when the soldiers said they were looking for Jesus, twice Jesus said that He was the one (John 18:5, 8).
    • When the time came for someone to pay for the sins of the world, Jesus stood up and said, “I am He!”
    • TQ Jesus that You were willing to take my place and die for my sins!
  • Conclusion
    • Jesus obeyed the Father’s Will and took the cup of punishment for us
    • Jesus was alone so that we would never have to be alone
    • Jesus offered Himself willingly for us

Jesus celebrates the Passover Meal

1. Lesson (based on Luke 22:7-231 Cor 11: 24-25)
Props needed: bread and cup (we will take communion together as a class)
  • Jesus had been preparing for His death since He came into Jerusalem on a donkey.
  • Then came the time for the Passover Feast.
    • A major annual Jewish celebration
    • To remember the time God delivered the Israelites from Egypt
    • God told the Israelites to prepare the Passover meal — lamb and unleavened bread — and to spread the blood of the lamb on their door posts so that the angel of death will pass over them.

A. Initiation of the New Covenant
  • Jesus told His disciples to go make preparations for the Passover meal.
  • As they were eating at the table, Jesus did 2 things:
    •  Took the BREAD and broke it, giving it to His disciples
      •  He said:  “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
    • Took the CUP, gave to His disciples
      •  Saying: “In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
  • Jesus was foretelling His disciples that He was going to die; and when He died, He was cutting the New Covenant with God.
  • Man could not keep the Old Covenant with God, so Jesus had to come to fulfill the Old on our behalf and start the New.

B.      What did the bread and cup symbolize?

  • BREAD: Jesus’ Body
    • The unleavened bread had no yeast, was baked, pierced and striped; Jesus broke it before giving it to the disciples
    • On the cross: Jesus’ body would be torn apart for us (broken). It would be whipped (striped) and pierced (by the soldier’s spear).
  • CUP: Jesus’ Blood
    • Just like the Passover Lamb’s blood was spread over the Israelites’ door posts, keeping them safe from the angel of death, Jesus’ shed blood caused God’s punishment and judgment for our sins to pass over us.
    • Exodus 12:13 “When I see the blood, I will pass over you.”

C.      What did the bread and cup symbolize?

  • What does the bread and cup mean to me?
    • BREAD: Jesus’ Body was broken so mine can be healed and whole
      • Isaiah 53:5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.
      • When we eat the bread, we remember what Jesus has done on the cross for us and that His body was broken so that we can be healed.
      • Whatever sicknesses we may have, we can see it on Jesus as He hung on the cross for us. And His divine health and healing becoming ours.

    • CUP: Jesus’ Blood was shed for my complete forgiveness and righteousness
      • Matthew 26:28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
      • Under this New Covenant, it’s no longer about what we do or don’t do, but everything about what Jesus has done on the cross for us!
      • When we drink the cup, we remember that Jesus’ blood paid the price for our sins so that we can stand before God totally forgiven! We have traded all our sins and unworthiness for His righteousness.

    • Every time we eat of the bread and drink of the cup, we proclaim the death of Christ!
    • We also proclaim that we are part of God’s covenant people.

D.      Covenant Meal
  • Have the kids sit down quietly. Pass out the bread and the cup.
  • Hold up the bread. Say, “This bread symbolizes the body of Jesus that was broken for us so that we can enjoy His wholeness and healing. If anyone of you have a sickness, imagine Jesus on the cross with the same sickness … the same headache, or pain or flu. He took it all for you. So that today, you have His divine health.”
  •  Pray: Thank you Jesus that Your body was broken so mine can be healed and whole. Amen.
  • Eat the bread.
  • Hold up the cup. Say, “This cup represents the blood of Jesus that was shed on the cross for you and me. This blood paid the punishment of our sins. So today we don’t need to be punished anymore. All our sins are forgiven and we can stand righteous before God.
  • Pray:  Thank you Jesus that Your blood was shed so that I can be completely forgiven and righteous before You.
  • Drink the cup.

Signs of the Times

Lesson: Jesus is Coming Again Soon

1. Lesson (based on Luke 17:20-3721:5-37)

  • Introduction:
    • Show some pictures of common road signs and get children to guess what each one means.
    • These signs show us what to expect when we are driving on the road. They serve as warnings and reminders of what lies ahead so that we can be aware and prepared.
  • Before He died, Jesus also spoke about signs — these signs tell us that after He goes back to be with the Father, He is coming again.
  • He told a Parable of the Trees (Luke 21:29-31) — During the winter time, the trees all drop their leaves. But when you see new leaves begin to grow, then you know that summer is near. In the same way, when you see these signs, you know that Jesus is coming back again soon.
  • Some of these signs are:
    • Attacks on the Church:
      • The Church will be persecuted for believing in Jesus — brought before rulers
      • Family — parents, brothers, sisters, relatives — and friends will hate and betray you even to death.
      • But Jesus tells us not to worry. He is our wisdom — He will tell us what to do or to say. We will be able to share about Jesus with all these people
      • We don’t have to worry what people do to us. If we stay in Jesus, He will take care of us. Jesus says “Not a hair of your head will perish.”
    • In Nature / In the Natural World:
      • Great earthquakes, famines and diseases in various places (can show pix or news reports of Japan, New Zealand and China earthquakes; H1N1, Bird Flu etc)
      • Great signs from heaven — the sun, moon and stars; you might feel like the sky is falling!
      • Roaring and tossing of the sea (e.g. Boxing Day and Japanese Tsunamis)
      • The earth is longing for Jesus to return. Creation has been groaning in expectation. (Rom 8:22)
      • When you hear of natural disasters or epidemics, remember … Jesus is coming again soon!
    • Wannabes / Great Pretenders:
      • Jesus said that many will come and pretend to be Him. People may run after them or follow these people. Jesus warns us not to believe or follow them.
      • Jesus tells us that no one will know the exact time of His coming. Only God knows. And it will come suddenly.
      • Jesus tells us that when He comes again, the whole world can see Him at once! He will be like the lightning — flashing and lighting up the sky from one end to the other. He will come in a cloud with power and great glory.
      • We don’t have to listen to others who tell us to go somewhere to see Jesus because we can ALL see Him! And He is coming back for US!

  • What we can do:
    • Be watchful: Each time we see one of these signs, we know that Jesus is coming again soon! So don’t focus on the cares of life (just being concerned about day-to-day worries and pleasures), but look forward to Jesus’ coming again because He is bringing us back to the Father!
    • Do not fear: These things may seem scary, but it’s the beginning of something great — the Bible says it’s like “birth pangs”, when a mummy is giving birth to a new baby. At first it seems painful and scary, but then new life comes out.
    • Jesus = forever! Everything around us may go. Our friends may go. The earth may go. But Jesus will never go.
  • Memory Verse: Luke 21:33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
