I AM The Way, The Truth and The Life

1. HOOK

  • Using masking tape or chairs, set up an obstacle course for a kid volunteer. Take your volunteer outside of the class and tell them that the class will shout directions to them to help them get through the course.
  • While you or your helper has the volunteer outside of the class, give instruction to the class to give wrong directions. Put your volunteer at the entrance to the maze and blindfold them. When your volunteer begins to make his way through the maze, he will undoubtedly get off course or bump into chairs. When it is obvious that he will not be successful, stop the class and ask him what the problem is. He will say that he can’t understand the directions to get through. Now, start over again, but this time you take the hands of the child and walk him through the course. He will still be blindfolded and the class will still be shouting out the wrong directions, but this time he will be successful because of your direction.
  • Explain to the class: When we are on our own, we cannot find our way because of all the wrong directions from the world. We need someone to show us the way. Who is this someone? Jesus

2. LESSON: I AM the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14)

  • One night, Jesus and his disciples were eating together. It was the night Jesus was going to be betrayed.
  • Jesus was preparing His disciples about what was going to happen next. He knew it would be a troubling time, so He wanted to reassure them. He also told them that He will be going back to God, the Father, to prepare a special place for all of them and He is coming back for them.
  • Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.You know the way to the place where I am going.” (John 14:1-4)
  • One of His disciples, Thomas, asked, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
  • That’s a good question. How would the disciples know where Jesus was going? How were they supposed to find their way to God? Do you think they had a map? Or a GPS?
  • No, they didn’t have all of that. But they had the one thing they needed. Jesus.
  • Jesus said, “I AM the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
  • Just like in the game we played earlier. Man was separated from God, and man has always tried to find his way back to God. But the world shouts all sorts of wrong directions. And in our own strength, we cannot find the way.
  • But when Jesus is in us, He becomes our (only) WAY to the Father; He is ourTRUTH (so we don’t have to listen to the lies the world tells us); and He gives usLIFE forever with Him.
image
  • Jesus had to die on the cross to open the WAY for us to the Father.Jesus is the ONLY way. We can’t reach God by our own good behaviour or works, or by any other religions and beliefs. Only Jesus.
  • Jesus’ death made us holy/righteous/clean because He is the TRUTH — the perfect man who was punished for the sins of the world.
  • After Jesus rose again and returned to heaven, His Holy Spirit came to live in us forever. This Holy Spirit is His LIFE living in us.
  • For older classes:How can Jesus claim to be the Way, the Truth and the Life? How can Jesus claim to be the ONLY way to God? Because He is GOD.
Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.”
  • And when we receive Jesus into our hearts, the Holy Spirit lives in us. Jesus said, “I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.” (John 14:20) God — the Father, Son and Holy Spirit — lives in us today! He is our life!

Conclusion

  • Jesus = the Way, the Truth, the Life
  • Jesus is ALL we need. We just need to believe and receive Him.
  • Jesus + Nothing = EVERYTHING!

3. ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS

I AM The Light of The World

1. HOOK: Skit: Light up

  • Get ready a torchlight, a RM10 note, plaster (band aid), flowers, sweets/chocolates. Switch off the lights. Have a teacher/helper/child act out the following:
  • One person walks, trips and falls. Groans aloud.
  • 4 concerned people come to help, first one offers money; second, plaster another flowers and fourth one, sweets/chocolates. The person refuses all of them. (For the older children, you can ask them to tell the fallen person why they gave the item). Person refuses all the items.
  • Finally someone comes with atorchlight and the person gratefully accepts. He/she continues his/her journey confidently.
  • What do you do if the lights go off in your house during the night? Yes, you would take out your torchlight, light your candles. What a person in the dark needs most is light — not money, food, etc.

2. LESSON: I AM the light of the world (John 8)

  • Jesus told the people (John 8:12), “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 9:5 “While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
  • Why did Jesus say he was the light? What did he mean?      IMG_0698

 A. Jesus is the light

  • Living life without Jesus is like being in the dark.
  • In the dark, we are worried that when we walk, we may trip over something because we can’t see what is ahead. When we don’t know God, we worry of what will happen to us in the future (eg what will we be when we grow up, what happens to us when we die).
  • We cannot see that God loves us so much, has plans to give us a hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11) and even prepared a home for us in heaven (John 14:2).
  • This is because Satan has blinded the minds of people who don’t believe in him, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God (2 Corinthians 4: 4).
  • But when we accept Jesus as our Saviour, our eyes are open. We can see clearly!
  • We’ll know that we have a God who loves us so much that he gave up Jesus to die for us on the cross and lives in

our hearts. We have eternal life. We don’t have to be afraid of what will happen to us in the future because we know that God will take good care of us. Jesus shines a way for us through the darkness of our situation/problems/challenges.

B. Jesus is always with us so we always walk in the light

  • How many of you think that sometimes we walk in light and there are other times we walk in the dark? That is not correct.
  • Walking in the light does not mean we never sin. Yes, sometimes we make mistakes and sin. But we still walk in the light because we have Jesus, who is the light. He is always with us, will never leave us or forsake us. (Hebrews 13:5) That is why Jesus said in John 8:12 that whoever follows him will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. We will always walk in the light.

C. We are the light

  • Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world”. We are the light because we have the light; Jesus. Because we have Jesus, we can love people the way Jesus loves. When people experience that love, they will see Jesus! It is like using the light from one candle to light the other candles.
  • Ask if any of the children want to accept Jesus as their personal saviour and if any, pray together with them.
IMG_0696

3. ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS

IMG_1200
  • Song: This little light of mine
  • Sharing: Get children to share how they have experienced God’s love through other people.
  • Thanksgiving Box: Get kids to write down what they can thank God for these past few weeks, fold, write their name and put into the box.
  • Candle-lighting: Get one big candle and several small candles for the whole class. Light the big candle — this illustrates Jesus. Then get the kids to light their candles either from the big candles or the other small candles. The light from the original candle passes to other candles (us) when we receive Jesus as our Saviour. Today we have that same light and can use it brighten up someone else’s day.
  • Song: Light of the World
  • Memory verse: John 8:12 “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

I AM The Bread of Life

1. HOOK: Bread!

IMG_0426
  • Show some pictures of bread — roll, toast, sandwich, loaf, baguette, pita — and demonstrate accompanying actions.
[you can pick/choose the types of bread depends on age of kids]
[teachers/assistants hv to be well versed with the actions and mirror it for the kids to follow]
  • Roll: curl up in a ball
Toast: jump up and down (like a toast popping up from the toaster)
Loaf: get into groups of 5 or more
Baguette: stand up stretching from tips of fingers to toes
Sandwich: get into groups of 3
Pita: lie flat on the floor
  • After running through the actions, flash the pictures random and get kids to do the correct actions. Those who don’t get it right have to sit down. Go faster and faster until you have a winner (or 2). Make it fun and exciting.

2. LESSON: John 6

  • Jesus told people about God’s love. He did so many miracles. He healed the sick. He also fed the hungry people. Once, He fed 5,000 men with just 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish!
  • Everybody ate very full. They were very excited about Jesus. So the next day, they looked for Him so they could see more miracles (and probably get more bread to eat).
  • Jesus told them there was something more important that just thinking about food (and toys and things that we buy with money).
  • Yes, we need to eat to live. But we should not spend our whole life working hard for food and things that will be used up. We should work for food that lasts forever.
  • What kind of bread doesn’t spoil or mold or go bad? What bread will last forever?
  • The bread of life! Jesus said, “I AM the BREAD of LIFE”. Jesus is the bread of God that came down from heaven to give life to the world! (John 6:33)

    A. When we have Jesus, we have true life

  • Back in Bible times, bread was the most important part of the meal. So when Jesus said He was the Bread of Life, He meant that He was the most important thing a person needs to live.
  • John 6:35 Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
  • When we are hungry for food, we can eat bread. But there’s a deeper hunger in all of us — a hunger for meaning, for peace, for love. This hunger for real LIFE — the life God gives — cannot be filled with things (hold up some items, toys, money etc.) The Bible says that only Jesus can satisfy that type of hunger. We need Jesus to receive the true, wonderful, true LIFE that God has for us.

    B. Jesus’ body was broken for us

  • John 6:51 This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
  • Jesus became the Bread of Life for us by the sacrifice of His body on the cross. Every time we take Communion, we remember Jesus’ finished work on the cross — His body broken for us so that we can have His life.
  • Who is Jesus? Jesus is God’s Son!
What did Jesus do for you and for me? He died for you and for me.
How did He die? He died on a cross.
Why did He die? He died so that we could be His friends.
Is He still dead? NO! He rose from the dead 3 days later so that we can have life!

     C. Our work is to believe in Jesus

  • How do we work for this bread of life? Jesus said, “The work of God is that youbelieve in Me.” (John 6:40)
  • John 6:40 “For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son andbelieves in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
  • Believe. That’s all! Can you believe in Jesus? Will you believe in Jesus?
Pray: God, thank you for sending your Son, Jesus. Thank you for making a way for us to have life with you forever.

     Summary:

  • Jesus is the Bread of Life — when we have Jesus, we have true life!
  • Jesus’ body was broken for us
  • Our work is to believe in Jesus

3. ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS

  • Song: (tune of “B-I-N-G-O”)
J-E-S-U-S, J-E-S-U-S, J-E-S-U-S, He died for you and me!
He is Bread of Life, He is Bread of Life,He is Bread of Life, He died for you and me!

I AM the Good Shepherd

1. INTRO: Say my name

  • Have the kids line up outside the class. Dress up as shepherds if you can.
  • Call them one-by-one by name before letting them enter the class.(You can pass out the name tags and take attendance then)
  • Once they are seated, say: “Do you know that the Shepherd will open the gate to the sheep pen for his sheep? He will call them by name, and they will listen to His voice. Today, we are all sheep, and we learn about how our Good Shepherd takes good care of all of us.”

2. REVISION

  • Psalm 23 (NIV) with actions/flashcardsActions

3. HOOK: Who am I?

  • Prepare a short quiz. Choose 3-4 animals or cartoon character or famous personalities and describe them with some clues. You can put clues on ppt slides or, for younger children, hide some soft toys in a bag and pull it out when they guess the answer.
E.g. I have white wool. I like to eat grass. <Sheep>I am a rodent. I have big black ears. I am quite famous on TV. <Mickey Mouse>

4. LESSON (John 10:1-18)

  • When Jesus came to earth, He gave us a picture of who the Father was. When we see Jesus, we see God.
  • Jesus also gave us several clues so that we can know more about Him and know who He is.
  • One of the clues He used to describe Himself was: “I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD”
  • Read out John 10:1-18 (for older kids)

IMG_0114

A. I AM the Good Shepherd

  • Jesus was making a declaration. It was “I AM”. Not “I may be” or “I could be” or “I should be”. Not “I was” or “I will be”. He’s telling the people who He really is. Now. Today. Every day.
  • “I AM” is a also a claim to God’s divinity. God calls Himself the “I AM”. When He spoke to Moses at the burning bush, He said, “I AM the I AM”. Jesus was declaring that He was God Himself.
  • Jesus is God. Yesterday. Today. Forever.

B. I am THE Good Shepherd

  • Jesus is not like any other good shepherds out there. He’s the ONLY Good Shepherd. Just like He’s not like any other god, but THE ONLY God.

C. I am the GOOD Shepherd

  • Jesus is good. Even when things go wrong or bad things happen, we can always trust that our God is good and has good plans for us.

D. I am the Good SHEPHERD

What does a shepherd do?
  • A shepherd’s job is a very lowly one but also very important.
  • In Psalm 23, we learn of how the shepherd provides all the sheep’s needs — water, green pastures, oil, rest, safety etc

In John 10, Jesus tells us that he:
a. Lays down His life for the sheep
  • The hired hand will run for his life and forget about the sheep if he sees a wolf coming
  • The Good Shepherd cares for the sheep and is willing to die for His sheep
  • Jesus repeats this several times to emphasise that He is the Saviour who will die for all of us — His sheep.
b. Knows his sheep and calls them by name
  • Jesus knows us. He cares for us. He leads us.
  • We know His voice. We can follow Him.
  • He knows us intimately just as the relationship between God and Jesus … SO CLOSE!
  • And no one can take us away from Him. “No one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.” (John 10:28)
c. Came to give us life
  • The thieves and robbers climbs into the sheep pen without going through the door; they come to steal, kill and destroy.
  • But the Good Shepherd comes to give us all abundant life! (John 10:10)
  • The Good Shepherd comes to give us all eternal life! (John 10:28)
JESUS IS THE GOOD SHEPHERD. He lays down His life for us. He knows us intimately. He came to give us eternal and abundant life!

5. Suggested activities

  • Memory Verse activity: John 10:11“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
  • Baa Baa Song
