                The Significance of the Sabbath
                                                                                              Source by : TNCC, Malaysia

1. HOOK: Stop Rest Game

  • Play some fast music. Get the children follow you in a vigorous aerobic exercise routine. (You may want to check whether there are any children who are unwell and excuse them from this exercise). Tell them, “I want you all to follow me in doing this exercise. Don’t stop until the music stops”. Then you must sit down on the floor, where you are, close you eyes, rest and not do anything until I tell you what to do”. After you can see that most of them are getting exhausted, signal to your helper to stop the music.
  • After settling down, ask the children “How many of you are tired? (Preferably, most of them!) Were you glad that we could stop and rest?”
  • Song suggestion 1
    Song suggestion 2

2. LESSON: The Significance of the Sabbath

  • We just played a game about “rest”. Today we are going to learn about the “Sabbath”, a day of rest.
  • Under the Old Covenant or Mosaic Law, the Israelites were required to rest and not work on Sabbath day.
  • Exodus 20:8-10 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work…”
  • The Sabbath was a sign given to the Israelites to acknowledge God as both their
    • Creator – God created the world in 6 days and rested on the 7th day. God rested, not because he was tired, but he rested because he had completed his work and he wanted to enjoy his creation.
    • Redeemer – God had rescued the Israelites from being slaves to Pharoah in Egypt. (Deut 5:5).
  • There was severe punishment for the Israelites if they did not rest and refrain from work on Sabbath day, i.e. death (Exodus 31:4). The Israelites’ disregard for God and not keeping the Sabbath had in the end, resulted in their enemies, the Babylonians capturing them and taking them as prisoners to Babylon.
  • The religious teachers (Pharisees etc) of Israel made many ‘difficult to understand’ rules and regulations concerning the Sabbath. Some of them were strange and did not make sense. Eg women were not allowed to look into a mirror because they may see a white hair and end up pulling it out. Even pulling out a white hair was considered work! Spitting on the ground would disturb the soil and so was likened to ploughing and therefore, also considered work!
  • When Jesus came as a man, there were a number of times when Jesus healed sick people on Sabbath day. The hard-hearted religious people were shocked as they considered healing as “work”. But Jesus showed us how God saw the Sabbath and how he saw people. Jesus healed the sick so that they need not feel pain/discomfort and worry about their condition, but be at rest as well as enjoy peace. He would work so that people could rest.
  • The Sabbath, which was introduced to the Israelites through the law more than 1000 years before Jesus was born, was a shadow of Jesus. Just as a shadow showed the real person is nearby, the Sabbath showed Jesus would eventually be man’s rest.
  • Under the Old Covenant, the Israelites were required to rest on Sabbath day.
  • Under the New Covenant, Jesus is our Sabbath “rest”. “Rest” does not mean “not working” but means :
  • Rest from our own efforts or worksJesus said in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest”. Who can give us rest? Jesus. Jesus has completed the work for our salvation. We need not try to gain acceptance from God by our own efforts or works. Because of Jesus, we are already accepted and we have God’s favour. We are his precious sons and daughters, and He is our loving heavenly Father.
  • Rest from worries and trust God to take care of usEven in the midst of a violent storm, Jesus was sleeping in a boat, while his disciples were panicking and freaking out. They woke him up saying, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, told the wind and the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” and it was completely calm (Mark 4:35-41). Today, we can also rest from our worries and fears, knowing that this same Jesus is always with us, will never leave us nor forsake us. We trust, because we know that He will take care of us no matter what circumstances we are in.
  • Since Jesus, our Sabbath rest is with us 24/7 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week), we can rest from our own efforts and worries all the time!
Today we have learnt that under the New Covenant, Jesus is our Sabbath rest so:
  • We can rest from our own efforts or works. Jesus has completed the work for our salvation.
  • We can rest from worries and trust in God to take care of us in whatever circumstances.

3. SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES

  • Ask if any of the children want to accept Jesus as their personal saviour and experience His rest. Pray together with them.
  • Song: With Christ in the Vessel

1. LESSON: Covenant Meal

A. Review on Cross Exchange (quick review)
  • Jesus was PUNISHED so that we might be FORGIVEN (Isa 53:6)
  • Jesus was WOUNDED so that we might be HEALED (Isa 53:5b)
  • Jesus was made SIN that we might be RIGHTEOUS (2 Cor 4:21)
  • Jesus DIED that we might be ALIVE (Isa 53:12b)
  • Jesus was CURSED that we might be BLESSED (Gal 3:13-14)
  • Jesus became POOR so that we might be RICH (2 Cor 8:9)
  • Jesus was SHAMED that we might be GLORIFIED (Isa 53:3)
  • Jesus was FORSAKEN that we might be ACCEPTED (Matt 27:46; Eph 1:5-6)

image
B. Jesus introduces the New Covenant Mealimage
  • Every Sunday, we celebrate the Holy Communion. The Holy Communion is also known as the New Covenant Meal. Jesus tells us to do this as often as we can, in remembrance of Him.
  • What is the significance of the New Covenant meal?
  • <discuss> Not a snack. Not a ritual. Not a magic formula. To remember what Jesus has done on the Cross — the Cross Exchange.
  • The night Jesus was betrayed, He sat down for supper with his disciples to celebrate the Passover.
  • Jesus knew He was going to die on the cross, and on that cross, He will be cutting the New Covenant with God.
  • As they were eating at the table, Jesus did 2 things:
    • Took the BREAD and broke it, giving it to His disciples
      • He said: “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
    • Took the CUP, gave to His disciples
      • Saying: “In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

C. What the bread and cup symbolises
  • imageBREAD: Jesus’ Body was broken so mine can be healed and whole
    • The unleavened bread had no yeast, was baked, pierced and striped; Jesus broke it before giving it to the disciples
    • On the cross: Jesus’ body would be torn apart for us (broken). It would be whipped (striped) and pierced (by the soldier’s spear).
    • imageAll the bad things/punishments we deserved fell on Jesus, so that we can have all the blessings of the Cross Exchange.
    • Isaiah 53:5 But He was wounded for our transgressions (wrong doings), He was bruised for our iniquities (sins); the chastisement (punishments) for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.
    • When we eat the bread, we remember what Jesus has done on the cross for us.
    • If we are sick, we remember that we have Jesus’ healing.
    • If we are poor, we remember that we have Jesus’ riches.
    • If we are feeling forsaken, we remember that we are accepted in Jesus.
  • imageCUP: Jesus’ Blood was shed for my complete forgiveness and righteousness
    • imageJust like the Passover Lamb’s blood was spread over the Israelites’ door posts, keeping them safe from the angel of death, Jesus’ shed blood caused God’s punishment and judgment for our sins topass over us. (Exodus 12:13)
    • Jesus paid our punishment with His blood.
    • Matthew 26:28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
    • When we drink the cup, we remember that what Jesus has done on the cross for us.
      • He took our punishment, so that we are forgiven
      • He was made sin that we are righteous
      • He was shamed that we are glorified
  • Under this New Covenant, it’s no longer about what we do or don’t do, but everything about what Jesus has done on the cross for us!
  • Every time we eat of the bread and drink of the cup, we proclaim the death of Christ! We remember the exchange on the Cross!
  • We also proclaim that we are part of God’s covenant people.

2. SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES: Covenant Meal

  • Have the kids sit down quietly. Pass out the bread and the cup.
  • Hold up the bread. Say, “This bread symbolizes the body of Jesus that was broken for us so that we can enjoy His wholeness and healing. If anyone of you has a sickness, imagine Jesus on the cross with the same sickness … the same headache, or pain or flu. He took it all for you. So that today, you have His divine health.”
  • Pray: Thank you Jesus that Your body was broken so mine can be healed and whole. Amen.
  • Eat the bread.
  • Hold up the cup. Say, “This cup represents the blood of Jesus that was shed on the cross for you and me. This blood paid the punishment of our sins. So today we don’t need to be punished anymore. All our sins are forgiven and we can stand righteous before God.
  • Pray: Thank you Jesus that Your blood was shed so that I can be completely forgiven and righteous before You.
  • Drink the cup.
If there’s extra time, break into small groups for sharing and prayer.

The Cross Exchange

Source by : TNCC, Malaysia

1. LESSON: The Cross Exchange

A. What is a Covenant? (quick review)
  • God is a covenant-making God:He makes promises with His people, and He keeps them!
  • A Covenant is:
    • 2 parties/people  1 (e.g. marriage)
      • What’s mine is yours; what’s yours is mine
      • Someone hurt you = someone hurting me
      • For life; till death do us part
    • Usually signed by blood or exchange of personal belongings (e.g. wedding rings)

B. The Cross Exchange
  • At the Cross, the New Covenant was cut and an important exchange took place!
    • Jesus took our sin and all the bad we deserved so that we could have all Hisgood!
    • Isaiah 53:5-6But he was pierced for our transgressions,    he wascrushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
      each of us has turned to our own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
          the iniquity of us all.
  • What happened at the Cross?(get the older kids to refer/read out the scripture verses; for younger kids, just focus on the key words in the exchange)
  • What is the result of the Cross Exchange?
    • An Exchanged Life!
    • Our old life is GONE. We live Jesus’ life in us!
    • Gal 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.
The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God,
who loved me and gave Himself for me.
    • Thank you Jesus!

2. SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES

  • Opposites Game
    • Print out the various pictures for each “Exchange”. Have each kid hold one “Bad”. Teacher will hold all the “Good” as Jesus. Kids will come up one by one to exchange their “Bad” with Jesus’ “Good”.

1. LESSON: Covenant Review

0929 Covenant Review
A. What is a Covenant?
  • God is a covenant-making God:He makes promises with His people, and He keeps them!
  • A Covenant is:
    • More than a contract
    • 2 parties/people –> 1 (e.g. marriage)
      • What’s mine is yours; what’s yours is mine
      • Someone hurt you = someone hurting me
      • For life; till death do us part
    • Usually signed by blood or exchange of personal belongings (e.g. wedding rings)
    • Penalty for breaking covenant = death
  • There are 3 major covenants in the Bible:
    • Abrahamic Covenant
    • Mosaic (Old) Covenant
    • New Covenant (like the name of our church, tNCC)
    • We also looked at David and Jonathan’s Covenant, which is a picture of God’s kindness to us for Christ’s sake

B. Key lessons from Covenants
(highlight key points and Christ lesson; keep it short and sweet)
i. Abrahamic Covenant
  • imageGod promised Abraham many good things:
    • Promised Land
    • Abraham’s family > great and blessed nation
    • Abraham’s seed will bless all families of the world
    • Gen 15:1 “I am your shield, your exceedinglygreat reward.”
  • God cut a Covenant with Abraham between animals torn into 2:
    • Only God walked through the animals, while Abraham slept
    • This covenant cannot fail because God cannot fail — Unconditional
  • Christ lesson:
    • At the cross, Jesus cut the New Covenant with God — hence it cannot fail!
    • At the cross, Jesus took the punishment for our sin — His body was broken and bloody just like the animals.
    • Jesus is the promised seed of Abraham that will bless all the families of the world!

ii. Mosaic Covenant
  • imageAfter bringing the Israelites out of Egypt, God made a Covenant with them to:
    • Teach them His 100% perfect standards
    • Set them apart as a different nation
  • Conditional Covenant:
    • OBEY FULLY = BLESSED
    • DISOBEY ANY = CURSED
  • Mission impossible: Even though the Israelites all said “Yes, we will obey!” they failed again, again and again.
  • Christ lesson:
    • Only a PERFECT man could keep God’s laws 100%.
    • Jesus is the only perfect man who ever lived!
    • Jesus:
      • Lived a sinless life
      • Fulfilled the WHOLE law
      • Took ALL the curses we deserved
      • So that we can receive ALL the blessings in Him!

iii. New Covenant
  • imageBecause Israel couldn’t keep the Old Covenant, God promised them a New Covenant.
  • In Jeremiah 31:33-34, God promised:
  • “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israelafter that time,” declares the Lord.
I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts.
I will be their God, and they will be my people.
No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,”
“For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”
  • The biggest difference between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant is:I WILLvs THOU SHALT NOT
  • Not about what we can do, but what Jesus has done!
  • New Covenant = ALL ABOUT JESUS!

iv. David & Jonathan’s Covenant
  • imageDavid and Jonathan were best friends. They made a Covenant with each other — What’s mine is yours. What’s yours is mine.
  • When David became king, he looked out for Jonathan’s family so he can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake.
  • He found Mephibosheth — Jonathan’s son who was crippled.
  • Because of his covenant with Jonathan, David showed Mephibhosheth kindnessand gave him:
    • Assurance: Do not fear
    • New Life
    • Restoration
    • Provision
    • A Place at the King’s table
    • Sonship
  • Christ lesson: Because of Jesus, we receive the kindness of God!
    • Jesus gives us:
      • Assurance: No fear
      • New Life (Eph 2:4-5)
      • Restoration —Jesus came to restore us to the Father and all the Adam lost in the garden of Eden (Joel 2:25)
      • Provision (Phil 4:19)
      • A Place at the King’s table (John 6:53)
      • Sonship (Galatians 3:26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.)

2. SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES

  • Matching Gamee.g. Match pix of Abraham with pix of baby Isaac; pix of David/Jonathan with pix of Mephibosheth; pix of Moses with pix of 10 commandments; pix of Jesus with red heart
  • Memory Gamee.g. Have 2 sets of each pix. Face downwards. Get kids to find a pair of the same pix.
  • QuizOn key lessons of Covenants; Christ lesson; memory challenge (Jeremiah 31:33-34)
  • PostersProvide 4 A3-sized posters with name of Covenant (and pix) and markers. Divide kids into 4 groups. Get each group to work together and write about one of the Covenants — what they learnt from it, the Christ lesson, Scripture verse etc.
  • Close in prayer

The New Covenant Foretold
Source by : TNCC, Malaysia

1. HOOK: “Can you do everything?” challenge

  • Make an agreement/contract with the class. If anyone can do everything that you ask them to do, they get rewarded. Have ready the reward/treat and display it. Get them to agree. Write with large handwriting on a big piece of paper of paper
“ (your name) will give chocolates/treats to the children if they can do everything she/he asked them to do”.
    “Signed____________
    (on behalf of the children)”
  • Get a representative from the children to sign the agreement and you also sign.
  • The challenge has to be difficult so much so that no one meets it. You can start with a “Simple Simon” game: What Simon says, everyone must do. When Simon didn’t say, no one must do. (Get another helper to help you catch those who didn’t follow what Simon said). Let’s start – Simon says “Lift your right arm”, Simon says “lift your left arm”, Simon says, “jump”. Simon says “wave your hands”. Stop. (If they stop keep jumping and waving the hands, they are out because Simon didn’t say so. They have to keep jumping and waving the hands. You have to say it quite fast to catch them and may vary the actions).
  • If there are those who managed to win the game, try to give the winners a quiz where they have to answer all the questions.
  • You may use other games, but the objective is to show that no one can do everything they are told to do.
  • Now you can use the game to illustrate your point. “Remember the Old Covenant?” “Who did God make the covenant with?” Israelites. “Were they able to obey everything in God’s law?” No. “The game we played (can you do everything challenge) was something like the Old Covenant”.
  • Tell the class, “I want to change the agreement so that I can give chocolates/treats to you even when you can’t do everything I asked you to”. Tear up the piece of agreement in front of the class, and similarly you and the representative of the children sign:
“ (your name) will give chocolates/treats to the children”.
    “Signed____________
    (on behalf of the children)”
  • Tell them you will distribute the treats to all children at the end of the class.
  • IMG_3512

2. LESSON: The New Covenant foretold

imageA. The Problem with the Old Covenant
  • We just played a game where we had to change the agreement so that you wouldn’t lose.
  • But do you know that God did exactly that. He made a New Covenant because the people couldn’t obey the Old Covenant.
  • Who did God make the Old Covenant with? The Jews/Israelites.
  • The Old Covenant/Law was good. It showed us God’s holiness and perfection.
  • But there were 2 big problems. First, we could not fulfil our part. Second, it could not help us keep it. E.g. it was like a mirror — it showed us our faults and mistakes, but it couldn’t help us change. <bring a mirror as a visual aid if u like>
  • About 600 years before Jesus was born, God told his prophet, Jeremiah to tell the people that he would make a new covenant with his people and it will not be like the Old Covenant.

B. God promised a New Covenant
  • God made all these promises in Jeremiah 31:33-34
“This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel
after that time,” declares the Lord.
  • Who did God make the New Covenant with? Jesus.
  • It’s ALL about what Jesus does for us. Not about what we can do for God.
  • The biggest difference between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant is:I WILLvs THOU SHALT NOT
  • New Covenant = ALL ABOUT JESUS!

C. What God promised in the New Covenant
imagei. God’s Law written in our minds & hearts
  • Under the Old Covenant, there were altogether 613 laws for the Israelites to obey. If you break one, it is the same as breaking them all. It is impossible to remember and obey 613 laws!
  • Today, we don’t need a rule book to tell us how to live our lives anymore.
  • As the Holy Spirit lives within us, he will guides us so we will know what we should do or not to do in any situation. As our minds are renewed and our hearts transformed, we will live in response to all the Jesus has done on the cross for us!
  • Just like in class: Jesus loves us so much, so we can love one another — don’t disturb our friends, listen to our teacher etc.
imageii. He is our God, We are His People
  • We always belong to Him.
iii. We will know God
  • Under the Old Covenant, only the high priest can enter the Holy of Holies in the temple, where God’s presence was to offer animal sacrifices to God once a year. Other people cannot enter the Holy of Holies. Under the New Covenant, we are made clean and righteous by Jesus’ blood. When we receive Jesus as our Saviour, the Holy Spirit who comes and lives within us. He will never leave us!
  • As we have the Holy Spirit, we can all know God personally, whether we are 4 years old or 80 years old, whether other people think we are important or not.
  • Jesus is our BFF!
iv. Our sins are forgiven and forgotten
  • When he was on this earth, Jesus kept the whole law and did not sin. On the cross, he took all our curses, all our punishment so that God forgave our past, present and future sins and remembers them no more.
    image

D. Conclusion:
  • Today we have learnt that under the New Covenant:
  • Everything is done for us by Jesus! We just need to believe in Jesus to receive all the blessings of the New Covenant!
  • The Holy Spirit guides us and is always with us.
  • God is our God, and we belong to Him.
  • We can all know God personally.
  • God forgives our past, present and future sins and remembers them no more.
  • Who would like to belong to God and know Him personally? <pray>

3. SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES

  • To reinforce that the Holy Spirit is always within us and he will remind us of Jesus, sing:
Every move I make I make in you Jesus
Every move I make I make in you Jesus (actions)
  • Memory verse: Jeremiah 31:33-34
    • Print 2 sets of these verses; cut out into phrases/words (for younger kids, use longer phrases). Get the kids into 2 teams to fix it all back together.
    • Or worksheet.
  • Matching Game: 2 posters — 1 grey in shape of tablets of stone; 1 red in shape of heart.
Prepare 10 “You shall not”s in black; Prepare “I will” in red with accompanying pix.
Get kids to match the “You shall not”s to the grey tablets; and the “I will”s to the red heart.
