Mary & Martha Encounter Jesus

1. HOOK

  • It was Daddy’s birthday. And Sam wanted to have a nice party for Daddy. So he hung decorations (including a hand-drawn “Happy Birthday” banner) and baked a cake. Daddy came home after work at 6. Wow! The house looked wonderful, and he was so happy. But wait, nobody was around! “Sam!” Daddy called. “Just a minute! I’m mixing the drinks!” Sam replied from the kitchen.
Daddy took a seat at the table and waited. After 10 minutes, he called again, “Sam! Come over here and join me!” “Hold on, Dad!” Sam said, as he ran to and fro the table and the kitchen. “I need to get the forks and spoons out.” Several more minutes passed. Daddy was feeling lonelier at the table.
Finally Daddy called Sam again. “Sam, come here.” “Wait Dad! I want everything to be just perfect for your birthday!”
“But Sam,” Daddy said. “My birthday will be perfect as long as I can spend it with you. Now there are all the decorations and cakes and drinks, but you are not here! All I want is to be able to celebrate my birthday by spending time with my boy! So come on here and sit with me and tell me about your day!”
Sam came and cuddled up to Daddy, and they had a lovely time together. They had such a good time that they almost forgot to eat the cake. But Sam finally realised that all his Daddy wanted was to be with him.
  • It is the same with our Heavenly Daddy, who loves us and just wants to be with us. Let me tell you about what happened when Jesus went to visit His good friends at their house.

2. LESSON: Mary & Martha Encounter Jesus (Luke 10:38-42)

i. Story (based on Luke 10:38-42) (Can use puppets or get kids to act out etc. Props can be kitchen ware/cleaning supplies for Martha.)
  • When Jesus visited his two friends, Martha and Mary, they must have been so excited to have Jesus in their house.
  • What did Martha do? She wanted to make everything perfect for Jesus. She cooked and cleaned and arranged everything neatly.
  • What did Mary do? She wanted to spend time with Jesus. So she just sat at His feet and listened to Him talk.
  • Martha was rushing everything … dinner time was coming. Where was that sister of hers? Just sitting there? That made Martha very angry. She complained to Jesus, “My sister left me to do the work by myself! Tell her to help me!”
  • Jesus calmed her down. “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

ii.  Lesson:
  • Martha thought Jesus would be pleased with her if she did everything right. She wanted everything to be just nice for Him.
  • But in her busyness, she became stressed — “upset and worried” about many things. She also became angry at people who weren’t as busy as her. She complained about them.
  • But Jesus reminded Martha that He didn’t need all her “doing” to be pleased with her. He was already pleased with her.
  • All she needed to do was be like Mary and to just sit and spend time with Him, resting.
  • It’s not wrong to want to serve Jesus. But we try to do things out of our own strength because we think God will love us more, then we become upset, angry and tired.
  • Let’s all learn to rest in Jesus first, to let Him fill us with His love and strength. Then our service and ministry will be an outflow of Him in our lives.
  • Illustration idea: (You may choose to use props etc) Torch light with battery vs Lamp plugged into socket. Once the battery runs out, the torch light will not work anymore. But the lamp is plugged into the power source and will keep on shining. If we do things on our own strength, we are running on our own battery, which will drain out eventually. But if we rest in Jesus, we’re always connected in His strength, which will never run out.
  • God promises rest to all of us in Christ Jesus. At the cross, Jesus has done everything for us; He becomes everything for us. When we trust in Him, we can rest and draw on His love, His joy, and His strength every day. And we can serve Him and others with His love, His joy and His strength.
  • Memory VerseMatthew 11:28 “Come to me, all who are tired, and I will give you rest.”
  • Prayer: Thank you Jesus that we can rest in You because You have done everything for us. Thank you that You love to spend time with us. Thank you for loving me. In Your name we pray, Amen.

3. ACTIVITY IDEAS

  • Quiet time: Play some slow worship songs (instrumental would be good). Have kids sit a bit apart from each other, close their eyes, keep quiet and just enjoy the music and God’s presence for about 5 -10 minutes (depending on age/attention span).
  • Song: (to the tune of London Bridge.)
Jesus came to see His friends,
see His friends, see His friends,
Jesus came to see His friends
They were happy.Martha baked a loaf of bread
loaf of bread, loaf of bread.
Martha baked a loaf of bread
    Just for Jesus.Mary listened carefully
    carefully, carefully.
    Mary listened carefully
    Just to Jesus.
  •  Close in prayer; remind kids that Jesus loves us so much that He wants to spend time.

WELCOME 2015

  • Play some fun, simple age-appropriate icebreakers — at least one that introduces kids to one another.
  • Some examples:
    • Pick up balls
      • Empty colourful balls around the class and get kids to pick them up and put back in box.
    • Blanket game
      • Get all the kids to introduce themselves. Divide class into 2 teams. Hold a large blanket in between. Each team sends a representative to sit in front of the blanket. When blanket is dropped, first side to shout out name of the other wins a point for their team.
    • Song: With Christ in the Vessel
    • Find your partner, Getting to know you, Name Chase

2. LESSON: Jesus is in our Boat this year! (Mark 4:35-41)

IMG_5875
  • Lesson idea: Jesus calms the sea
  • Why were the disciples so afraid? <Big winds, waves that would scare even seasoned fishermen>
  • Have you ever been afraid? Stressed? Worried?
  • As we go into this new year, there are lots of uncertainties. You may be in a new school, or facing a big exam, or your parents may be facing certain challenges in their jobs that could affect you.
  • As we set off on this journey through 2014, we should always remember:
    • Jesus is in the boat with us — He’s the one who said, “Let us go to the other side …”. He is not bringing us into the middle of the lake to drown.
    • In this case, Jesus shut the storm up (He’s God and He’s all powerful!). But sometimes He allows the storm to rage on. But whatever it is, no matter how big the storm is, no matter how much water is flooding into the boat, we will get through it because Jesus is with us.
    • Jesus cares! The disciples weren’t sure (“Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”). Sometimes when we face problems, we feel God isn’t there, that He doesn’t care. But we need to remind ourselves that Jesus really loves us, He cares for us and He never leaves us!
    • Jesus could sleep through the storm. When we really know Jesus is with us, we can rest (or even smile) in the storm. Just keep our eyes on Jesus through it all!
  • So remember, this year, whatever comes our way, we can declare, “Jesus is in my boat!”

3.  ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS:

  • What I’m asking God for this year
    • Get kids to share a prayer point — something they are looking to Jesus for this year.

Thank You Jesus

1. LESSON: Thank you Jesus

  • We’ve come to the end of 2014 ! There are many things that has happened in this year. And when we look back, there are many things we can thank God for. Maybe it’s the presents we got for Christmas. Or maybe it’s how He helped you in school. Or the holidays you went on. Or your parents who took care of you.
  • Why and how do we give thanks to God?
  • God is the Source of all our Blessings
    • James 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights …
    • God wants us to have good things. He wants us to have fun, be happy and enjoy life through small and big blessings. All these come from Him — every good thing in our lives. They are gifts given with the Father’s love.
    • And most importantly, above all, He gave us new life in Jesus, who came to give His life on the cross for us. If He has given us the biggest and the best gift, would He withhold any good thing from us? (Romans 8:32)

  • Our response is Thanksgiving
    • When we know that everything we have comes from God, our natural response is to say “Thank you!” Not just once a year but every day!
    • We are all blessed in many ways. Counting our blessings help us to be filled with gratitude. We don’t need to complain and compare when others have something we don’t have. We have direct access to the Giver of everything. So we look to Him instead of being sad or upset that others have more than we have.
    • We can give thanks even when things are not going so well (1 Thess 5:18). Because we know God is always working everything out for good for us (Rom 8:28).
    • Our thanksgiving can also overflow to bless others around us. We are blessed to be a blessing. There are so many others who are less fortunate than us. We can share the love of God to them also!

  • Memory Verse: Psalm 107:1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.

2. ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS

  • Get kids to think and write down something they are thankful for this year. Encourage different ones to share what they’ve written.
  • Open the Thanksgiving Box and distribute the thanksgiving notes they’ve written. Get them to stick them on coloured A4 paper as a record of what God has blessed them with this past year.

  • Younger classes may need more guidance/help, e.g.:
    • Song: To the tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.”
(Have them repeat line by line with actions, then slowly combine the lines together.)I know God loves me every day (Hug self)
God shows me in many ways (arms extended, separated lightly, palms up)
My family and the friends I meet (hands over heart)
And the good food that I eat. (Touch lips)
God’s good blessings with me stay. (arms raised, palms open)
I know God loves me every day (hug self)
    • Rhyme:
(Ask kids to pat their knees in rhythm. Tell them they’re going to pat a prayer to a one-two beat. Ask the kids to repeat each line after you say it. Keep the rhythm going throughout the prayer)Thank you God,
      For these gifts:
      Food,
      Families,
      Friends,
      Our beatiful earth,
      Us,
      Jesus,
      He sure loves us,
      He calls us friends.
      Amen!
