Jesus has authority over evil spirits

1. Story:
  • Tell the story of Jesus casting out the legion of demons from Luke 8:26-39.
  • Remember what we learnt last week? Jesus and his disciples were in a boat on the lake when there was a sudden large thunderstorm!
  • After Jesus calmed the storm, the boat reached the other side of the lake to the country of Gerasenes. (Get them to try to pronounce word)
  • When they went on shore, suddenly, a demon-possessed man came running up to them.
  • This man was under the power of an evil spirit. The evil spirit would attack him and make him do things he didn’t want to do. He was naked! He was dirty.
  • Even though the man was chained up on his hands and feet, with someone always watching him, the evil spirit would cause him to break the chains and go stay in the tombs — where dead people are placed.
  • Jesus commanded the evil spirit to leave the man.
  • The evil spirits recognised who Jesus was. They were afraid because they knew this was someone who had authority over them.
  • The man fell down before Jesus and cried out loudly, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!”
  • Jesus asked, “What is your name?”
  • The evil spirit answered, “Legion”, which meant many demons.
  • The evil spirits begged Jesus not to send them to the bottomless pit but into a herd of pigs nearby.
  • Jesus permitted them. The evil spirits went out of the man and entered the pigs, who ran violently off the cliff, into the lake, and drowned.
  • That must have been quite a scary sight — so many pigs just running off a cliff. Can you imagine how much torture the man was under by these spirits?
  • Those who saw what happened went to tell other people.
  • When they returned, this man was sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. What a transformation!
  • They were afraid and asked Jesus to leave.
  • The man who was delivered from the evil spirits wanted to follow Jesus. But Jesus told him to: “Return to your own house and tell what great things God has done for you.”
  • And the man went to tell the whole city what Jesus has done for him.

2. Lesson:
  • So far, we’ve learnt that Jesus has authority over sickness, over death, over nature … and over evil spirits.
  • The evil spirits knew Jesus was the Son of God, and they are afraid of Him!
  • Because we have Jesus in us, we don’t have to afraid of any evil spirits or ghosts or anything scary. We can command them to leave in Jesus’ name.
  • And today, you and I have the Holy Spirit in us. We are under the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit helps us to do the right thing. The Holy Spirit clothes us in righteousness. The Holy Spirit gives us the mind of Christ. So we can all go and tell everyone what Jesus has done for us!
  • Let’s pray: Thank you Jesus that at Your name, demons and evil spirits will run away. I do not have to fear them. And I thank You that Your Holy Spirit lives in me forever. In Your name, I pray Amen.

Jesus' Miracle: Jesus has authority over the demons

Leader's Guide

Read Luke 8:26-39
1.       Last week, where was Jesus and his disciples?
In a boat, crossing the Lake of Galilee.

2.       Who did Jesus meet when He reached the other side?
A demon-possessed man from the town.

3.       Describe this person’s appearance and condition.
Naked. Chained hand and foot. Lived in tombs.

4.       What was controlling this man?
Many demons — Legion.

5.       Where did these beg Jesus to send them into?
A large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside.

6.       What does what happened next tell you about the torment the man was put under?
The pigs rushed down the steep bank and drowned in the lake. The man was under a lot of oppressive powers that caused him great harm and could lead to his death.

7.       The man was delivered, but interestingly, the people’s reaction was fear and they asked Jesus to leave. But what did the man want to do? And what did Jesus tell him to do?
The man begged to go with Jesus, but Jesus tells him to return home and tell how much God has done for him. So the man told the whole town about what Jesus has done for him.

8.       State the difference in the man before and after Jesus delivered him.
Under power of evil spirits
Under power of Jesus
Naked
Clothed
Attacked and tormented
In right mind
Stayed in solitary places/tombs
Returned to the city to tell
what Jesus has done for him

9.       The evil spirits/demons were afraid of Jesus. They recognised that He had power over them. Do we need to fear the demons?
No. We have Jesus in us, and the demons will also be afraid of us. We can command them to leave in Jesus’ name.

God promised to bless Abraham

Lesson: The Blessings of Abraham are Yours

1. Story

  • There was an old man named Terah with 3 sons; the eldest was called Abram.
  • Abram married a beautiful woman named Sarai.
  • They went from Ur to Harran, where Terah passed away at 205 years of age.
  • Then God said to Abram: “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessingI will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” (Genesis 12:2-3)
  • Abram was 75 years old when he took Sarai and his nephew Lot with him to Canaan.
  • God gave Abram more promises: "To your offspring I will give this land." (Genesis 12:7)
  • At that time:
    • Abram had no descendants, no household, no significance, no identity
    • Abram meant "exalted Father", but he had no children. His name became a joke.
    • His wife was barren. At that time, childlessness was considered a curse.
  • But God was promising to him who was:
    • Dry & Burnt Out? A land flowing with milk and honey; a land of rest (Heb 4)
    • Feeling Insignificant? He will make him a "great nation"
    • Having to toil hard? He will bless with abundant increase
    • The butt of jokes? He will make his name famous and distinguished
    • Feeling accursed? He will be a blessing and God will bless those who bless him
  • God gave many, many more blessings and promises to Abram.
  • Because of Jesus, we also have a part in Abram's blessings!
    • Galatians 3:14 He redeemed us from the curse of the Law in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.
    • Galatians 3:16  The promises were spoken to Abrahamand to his seed. Scripture does not say "and to seeds," meaning many people, but "and to your seed" meaning one person who is Christ.
    • Galatians 3:29  If you belong to Christ, then you areAbraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
  • Thank you Jesus that all God's promises are "Yes" and "Amen" because of You!

Jesus feeds the 5,000 +++

Lesson: Jesus provides in abundance (Luke 9:10-17)

1. Story:
  • Props: Some bread and “fish” (either fish-shaped biscuits or kueh bahulu) that can be handed out as part of the story
  • Jesus and his disciples went to a town called Bethsaida, which was a remote place. But when the crowds heard he was there, they all followed him.
  • Jesus welcomed them. He spoke to them about God’s kingdom and healed all who needed healing. There were about 5,000 men and many other women and children there … a very big crowd.
  • Late in the afternoon, his disciples came to him and told him to send the crowd away to go find food and a place to stay because it was getting late.
  •  Instead, Jesus asked them to give the crowd something to eat.
  •  There were probably more than 10,000 people! How do you feed so many people?
  • There was a little boy who offered his lunch — 5 loaves of bread and two fish … not enough for so many! The disciples said, “If we were to go buy food for them, it would cost more than half a year’s salary!”
  • But Jesus was not troubled by the big numbers. He just told the disciples: “Have them sit down in groups of about 50 each.”
  •  Then when everyone was seated, Jesus took the five loaves and two fish and, looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them.
  •  Then he passed the bread and fish to his disciples to distribute.
  •  And the more they distributed, the more they seemed to have!
  •  People were eating the bread. People were eating the fish. And they ate and ate until they couldn’t eat any more!
  • The disciples were amazed.
  • As the crowd went off, fully satisfied, the disciples picked up the leftover bread and fish. They put them into baskets, and they filled 12 baskets of leftovers! More than enough!

2. Lesson: Good News for Today!
  • Sometimes we face problems so big that we cannot see how it can be solved. Maybe it’s a big school exam. Or we need something that costs a lot of money. In this case, it was 10 to 15,000 hungry people!
  • Our own supply, like this little boy, is so small — He only had 5 bread and 2 fish … his own lunch. How can he feed such a big crowd?
  • But Jesus does not focus on the lack or the problem. When he holds the bread and fish, the little that they had, He fixed His eyes above on God.
  • God has abundant supply. He is rich. He does not worry about lack.
  • And that supply today is ours because of Jesus. He became poor so that we can be rich.
  • We can look to Jesus and trust Him to provide for our every need. We can let Him use what little we have and see Him transform it. And He not only meets our need but supplies more than we can ever imagine.
  • Memory Verse: <spend some time getting kids to memorise it; u can pin up the verse on cards and then take out one card at a time until they can remember the whole verse>
    • Philippians 4:19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus
  • Let’s pray: Thank you Jesus that when we are faced with difficult situations, we can focus on You instead. We don’t have to see our lack. We can see Your supply. We can trust You to meet all our needs, according to the richest of Your glory in Christ Jesus. In Your name, I pray Amen.

3.  Activity ideas:
  • Father’s Day thanksgiving
    •  Have kids share one thing they are thankful for about their dad. (Be sensitive if a kid does not have dad)
    • Tell them as much as their earthly dads love them, their Heavenly Father loves them even more. And if there are things their dads can’t do, their Heavenly Father can.
  • Father’s Day craft
    • Choose a simple craft and have the kids write “Thank you Dad for ______________”
    • Origami shirt

Jesus' Miracle: Jesus provides in abundance (Luke 9:10-17)

1.       Where did Jesus and his disciples go? What do you think they intended to do?
They went to the town of Bethsaida. The disciples had just returned from share the good news about Jesus in surrounding villages. Jesus probably wanted to spend some time with them to rest.

2.       The crowds followed and found them though. How did Jesus react?
He welcomed them. Spoke to them about God’s kingdom. Healed those who were sick.

3.       When the disciples wanted to send the people to find food in the afternoon, Jesus asked them to give the crowd something to eat. What were the disciples’ response? (See also John 6:7-9)
So many people (5,000 men + women + children). Only five loaves and two fish. Take more than half a year’s wages to buy bread for everyone to have a bite.

4. What were they focusing on?
The disciples focused on the problem and their lack.

5.       Jesus already had in mind what He was going to do. He had the people seated in groups of fifty each. What did he do next?
Take the five loaves and two fish, looked up to heaven, gave thanks and broke them.

6.       What was the result?
Everyone had more than enough to eat and were satisfied. The disciples also picked up twelve baskets of leftover pieces.

7.       What can we learn from this lesson?
  •  Don’t look at the problem or your lack
  • Look to the source, God,  and give thanks

Memory Verse: Philippians 4:19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus
