Jesus calls the fishermen to be His disciples

Lesson: Jesus calls us to follow Him
1.    Story:
  • Tell the story of Jesus calling the fishermen to be His disciples from Luke 5:1-11.
  • One day, Jesus went to the Sea of Galilee. People crowded around Him and listened to the word of God.
  • There were two fishing boats at the shore, one belonging to a fisherman named Simon.
  • Jesus got into Simon’s boat and asked him to put the boat a bit further from the shore. Then Jesus sat down and taught the people from the boat.
  • After he taught the people, he told Simon, “Go to the deep water and put down the nets for a catch.”
  • Simon wasn’t so sure. After all, he was the fisherman. “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.” Simon was tired from being out all night. He didn’t want to try to catch fish again.
  • Yet, somehow, this strange man Jesus seemed to know something he didn’t. So Peter said, “But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
  • So Peter and his friends cast the net into the water. And guess what happened?! Suddenly the whole net was full of fishes! There were so many, that the nets began to break!
  • So they called their partners, James and John, to help them! And both boats were soooo full that they began to sink!
  • Suddenly Simon fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”
  • Jesus told Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on, you will fish for people.”
  • So Simon, James and John pulled their boats up on the shore, left everything and followed Jesus.
Act it out:
Props: Long table, 2 badminton nets, many cutout card fishes (can be reused for craft)
  • Set up a long table on its sides on the stage to resemble the side of the boat.
  • Pin the cutout card fishes to one of the nets; fill up the net if possible. Hide this net between the table and the wall. (You may want to stick one edge of the net to the back of the table for easy access).
  • Place the other empty net on the stage, visible to the kids.
  • Teacher sits on chair on the stage, as if in a boat, while telling the story. When it comes to putting down the nets, take the empty net and cast it behind the table.
  • Then do a “switch” and pull up the “full” net, slowly, as if it’s very heavy.
  • Call 2 boys to come on stage to help you pull the nets too.
  • When the “full” net is on the stage, let the boys sit down and continue with the rest of the story and lesson.

 2. Lesson: Good news for today!
  • When we do things on our own effort, sometimes we get little or no results. Like the fishermen who worked long and hard, through the night. But when Jesus tells you where to go and what to do, the result is more than you can ask for or imagine.
  • Like Simon, we have to realise that no matter how good or clever we are, we cannot be good enough to meet God’s standards.
  • But the good news is, Jesus is good enough! And when we trust in Him, He makes us good enough too. Isn’t that good news? Don’t you want to tell other people how good Jesus is?
  • Once you know how good Jesus is to you, you will be like the fishermen — you will leave everything (your own efforts, your achievements, your strengths) because Jesus is better than whatever we have. And we will want to share His love and grace to all your friends too!

 3. Activity Ideas:
a. Song: I will make you fishers of man

b. Activity Sheet: Fish Maze

c. Fishing Memory Verse
  • Prepare 3 sets of 9 fish cutouts (total 27); write on each one:|From | now | on | you | will | fish | for | people | Luke 5:10b |
  • Divide kids into 3 groups. Pass each group a set of jumbled up fish cutouts and let them arrange them to form the verse.

d. Craft: Fish Card
  • Each kid gets a cutout card fish (can use the same ones used in the story telling).
  • Have them write the memory verse on one side of the fish.
  • On the other side, let them write the name of a friend that they’d like to share the good news of Jesus with.
  • Lead them to pray for the friends who do not yet know Jesus’ love and goodness.

Jesus calls us to follow Him
Read Luke 5:1-8

Jesus' Life: Jesus calls us to follow Him

Read Luke 5:1-8
1.       Where was Jesus in this story?
By the Lake of Gennesaret (or the Sea of Galilee)
2.       Where did Jesus preach from?
Simon’s fishing boat.
3.       What did Jesus tell Simon to do after he finished speaking?
To put out into deep water and let down the nets for a catch.
4.       How did Simon Peter respond? How do you think he felt?
“Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” Simon was tired from being out all night. He didn’t want to try to catch fish again. After all, he was the fisherman, the “expert”. Yet, somehow, this strange man Jesus seemed to know something he didn’t, so he obeyed.
5.       What happened next?
They caught a large number of fish until their nets began to break. Then they signalled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and both boats were so full until they began to sink.
6.       What was Simon’s response to this miracle?
He fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”
7.       What did Jesus say? And how did the fishermen respond?
“Don’t be afraid; from now on, you will fish for people.” Then Simon, James and John pulled their boats up on the shore, left everything and followed Jesus.

·       Lesson:
o       When we do things on our own effort, sometimes we get little or no results. Like the fishermen who worked long and hard, through the night. But when Jesus tells you where to go and what to do, the result is more than you can ask for or imagine.

Jesus heals the paralytic

Lesson: Jesus has the power to forgive sins

1. Story:
  • Tell the story of Jesus healing the paralytic from Luke 5:17-26.
  • One day Jesus was teaching in a house in Capernaum.
  • The Pharisees and teachers of the law came from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem to hear him teach.
  • The house was very crowded.
  • Some men, carrying a paralysed man on a mat, tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus.
  • Who knows what “paralysed” means? (Someone who cannot move his body and limbs)
  • They had heard that Jesus was healing many people. So they wanted Him to heal their friend too.
  • But there were so many people in the house and they couldn’t get in!
  • Oh no! What do you think they could do?
  • Suddenly, they had an idea. They would bring their friend up to the roof and lower him through the tiles!
  • So they carried their friend to the roof and started removing the tiles. Then they lowered him carefully, slowly, down, into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
    • Act it out (optional): Prepare a “mat” with a string tied to each corner of it. Place a small doll or object to depict the paralysed man. Choose 4 volunteers and get them to stand on chairs. Give them each one of the strings and have them lower the “mat” down slowly to the floor without dropping the man.
  • Everybody must have been so surprised to see a man come down from the roof!
  • Jesus was pleased at the four friends’ faith. Then He told the paralysed man, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”
  • Isn’t that a strange thing to say? The paralysed man was waiting for Jesus to heal him, but Jesus just told him that his sins were forgiven.
  • The Pharisees and teachers of the law were not happy. They began thinking to themselves, “Who is this man who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
  • Even though they didn’t say it out, Jesus knew what they were thinking. He asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? Which is easier: to say ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say ‘Get up and walk’? But I want to tell you that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.”
  • So Jesus said to the paralysed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.”
  • Immediately, the man stood up in front of them, took up his mat and went home, praising God.
  • Everyone was amazed and praised God. They said, “We have seen remarkable things today!”

2. Lesson: Good News for today!
  • Last week, we learnt that Jesus had the power to heal. All who are sick can go to Him and He can make them whole.
  • This week, we see Jesus do another amazing miracle — He healed a paralysed man, someone who probably hadn’t walked or moved in years!
  • But more importantly, Jesus forgave the man’s sins. In the Bible times, sicknesses were seen to be a result of sin.
  • The Pharisees and teachers of the law were upset that Jesus said He forgave the man’s sins because only God could forgive sin.
  • So Jesus was actually saying that He was God. And He proved it by:
    • Knowing what the Pharisees and teachers of the law were thinking, even though they didn’t say anything aloud.
    • Asking the man to get up, pick up his mat and walk.
      • If Jesus were not God, the man’s sins would not have been forgiven, and he would still be paralysed.
  • Jesus not only had the power to heal this paralysed man but He also had the power to forgive sins!
  • The Pharisees and teachers of the law were probably not happy about that. But everyone else was amazed, and they all praised God!
  • None of us here are paralysed. We all can run and jump and play. Thank God for that!
  • But we were all paralysed by sin before. It was a sickness that no one could cure, except God.
  • Praise the Lord that Jesus came to take away all our sins and sicknesses. He tells us, “Your sins are forgiven!” And because of this forgiveness, we can now walk in the light of God! Hallelujah!
  • Memory Verse: But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” (Luke 5:24)
  • Pray: Lord Jesus, thank you that You came to die for me. You took all my sins and sicknesses on the cross. Because of You, I am forgiven and can now walk in God’s ways. Thank you for loving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
  • Assure kids that Jesus has forgiven them of their sins!

3.  Activity Suggestions:
a.       Craft: Mat
  • Materials: A5 cards with slits and strips of colour paper
  •  Have the kids sit in smaller groups.
  • Get kids to make a mat by weaving the colour paper through the cards.
  • Then write the memory verse on the mat.

Jesus' Miracles: Jesus heals the paralytic (Luke 5:17-26)
Read Luke 5:17-26.

1.         What town was Jesus in? What was its significance? (cref Mark 2, Matt 4:12-16)
Capernaum; this is where Jesus stayed when He had just begun His ministry (fulfilling another prophecy about the Messiah)

2.         Who was some of those who were there to hear Him teach in the house?
A large crowd, including Pharisees and teachers of the law from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem.

3.         Jesus had power to heal the sick. Who came to see Jesus for healing? What obstacles did they face, and what did they do about it?
A paralysed man on a mat brought by some men. They could not enter the house due to the crowd, so they went onto the rood and lowered him on the mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.

4.        What was Jesus’ reaction?
He was amazed at their faith and said, “Friend/Son, you sins are forgiven.”

5.         How did the Pharisees and teachers of the law react? Why were they upset?
They thought to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks  blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” They were upset because Jesus was likening Himself to God.

6.         Even though they did not speak it out, amazingly, Jesus knew what they were thinking in their hearts. Why do you think Jesus told the paralysed man that his sins were forgiven when he was obviously coming for physical healing?
In those times, sicknesses were sometimes seen to be a result of sin. Jesus knew that while this man wanted to walk again, his real need was forgiveness of sin and freedom from condemnation.
People knew Jesus had the power to heal, but Jesus established the fact that He alone had the authority and power to forgive sins — that He was God.

7.         How did Jesus prove that He was God?
·         Knowing what the Pharisees and teachers of the law were thinking, even though they didn’t say anything aloud.
·         Healing the man so he could get up, pick up his mat and walk. (If Jesus were not God, the man’s sins would not have been forgiven, and he would still be paralysed.)

8.         Write today’s Scripture memory verse (Luke 5:24)
“But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.”

Good news for today:
  • None of us here are paralysed physically.
  • Let’s thank Jesus for taking our sins and sicknesses on the cross and setting us free to walk in Him!

Jesus raises the widow’s son from death

Lesson: Jesus has authority over death (Luke 7:11-16)

1. Story:
  • Tell the story of Jesus raising the widow's son from death from Luke 7:11-16.
  • Last week we learned about Jesus healing the centurion’s servant in Capernaum.
  • Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain (Na'in). His disciples and a large crowd followed Him. After all, this was a man who could heal the sick and perform many miracles.
  • When Jesus came to the town’s gate, He saw a dead person being carried out with a large crowd following behind.
  • This dead person was the only son of a widow.
    • What’s a widow? A widow is a woman whose husband has died.
    • How many of you have mummies who work in the office? In those days, married women didn’t go out to work as they had to take care of the household. They depended on the men in the household to provide for them and protect them.
  • When this woman’s husband died, she would have depended on her son to take care of her. But now, her son, her only son, had died. She was alone, helpless and very sad.
  • When Jesus saw the widow, His heart went out to her. He hadcompassion on her. And He said, “Don’t cry.”
    • Jesus understood what the widow was going through.
    • Many times, when something bad happens, when we feel alone, helpless and very sad, we think nobody understands. We wonder where God is. But the truth is: He is there, He understands, and He is filled with love and compassion for us.
  • Then Jesus went and touched the coffin of the dead man.
    • According to the law then, touching a dead body was a taboo — it would make you “unclean” for 7 days.
    • But Jesus didn’t let that stop Him. Remember how Jesus touched the leper even though the leper was unclean and contagious?
    • While others may be afraid to let unclean things make them unclean, whatever Jesus touched became clean.
  • Then Jesus said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” And the dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
  • Those who saw this miracle were filled with awe and praised God. And news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.

2.  Lesson: Good News for today!
  • Last week, we learnt that Jesus has authority over sicknesses. When He commands healing, healing comes. When He commands sicknesses to leave, sicknesses leaves.
  • Today we see that Jesus has authority over death too. When He commands life to come, life comes. When He commands death to leave, death leaves. Hallelujah!
  • Not only did Jesus have power over death, but God's only Son also defeated death by rising from the dead. And He gives us eternal life so that we can live forever with Jesus.
  • Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10b; Memory Verse)
  • So as children of God, we don’t need to fear death. We can speak Jesus’ life into ourselves, other people, our situations etc knowing that Jesus has won the final victory for us.
  • Let’s pray: Thank you Jesus that You conquered death so that we can have Your eternal life in us. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Jesus' Miracles: Jesus raises the widow’s son from death
Read Luke 7:11-16.

1.  What was it like for a widow to lose her only son?
In those days, married women depended on the men in the household to provide for them and protect them. When this woman’s husband died, she would have depended on her son to take care of her. But when her only son died, she was alone and helpless.

2. How did Jesus respond when he saw the widow? What does this tell us about our God?
Jesus had compassion on her. He understood what she was going through.
Many times, when something bad happens, when we feel alone, helpless and sad, we think nobody understands. We wonder where God is. But the truth is: He is there, He understands, and He is filled with love and compassion for us.

3. Jesus went and touched the dead man’s coffin. What was so unusual about that? (cref Numbers 19:11)
According to the law then, touching a dead body was a taboo — it would make you “unclean” for 7 days. But Jesus didn’t let that stop Him. Remember how Jesus touched the leper even though the leper was unclean and contagious? Unclean things didn't contaminate Jesus; instead whatever He touched became clean!

4. Last week we learnt that Jesus has authority over sicknesses — He commands sickness to leave, and it leaves. In this case, what does Jesus demonstrate His authority over?
Death — He told the dead man to “Get up!” and he sat up and began to talk.

5. How did Jesus ultimately defeat death? And what does that mean for us today?
By dying on the cross and rising from the dead 3 days later. He gave us eternal life so that we can live forever with Jesus.

6. Memory Verse: John 10:10 I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.
