LESSON SUMMARY

Jonah was in the fish’s belly for 3 days, just as Jesus was in the tomb. Jesus died and rose from the dead after 3 days.

Jesus said in Matthew 12:40, “For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth”.

When Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead, he saved us from the death. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies and whoever who believes in me will never die”. (John 11:25-26)

God knows where we are!

Just like Jonah could not hide from God, we cannot hide from God. He knows us inside out. His eye is on the smallest sparrow, and His eye is on us. He loves us and will pursue us even when we choose to go our own way.

Jonah: Running from God (Jonah 1:1-3)

LESSON SUMMARY

Today we’re going to start looking at the Book of Jonah.
The Book of Jonah reads like a fairytale. But it is a true Biblical record.
It is named after the prophet Jonah.
And as we go through the book over the next few weeks, we’ll see a beautiful story about God’s grace!

Note:
Jonah tells the story of the God who would go to the worst of sinners. The God who would pursue the most stubborn of prophets. The God who would give His life to save many.
In the first chapter of the book “Give them Grace: Dazzling your kids with the Love of Jesus”, the authors use an example of how to use (and NOT to use) the story of Jonah when teaching our kids.

Seek first His Kingdom

1. Icebreakers 

• Play a simple age-appropriate icebreaker. Some examples:
• Freeze! 
  Play praise music and lead the children in movements (stepping side to side, clapping their hands, stomping their feet, tiptoeing, following the teacher in a circle, slapping their legs, doing jump and jacks, reaching up high and down low, etc). Have an assistant shut the worship music off and have the students freeze, standing completely still.  Play the music again and repeat multiple times.  For an added challenge, while students are freezing, recite a memory verse and begin again.

• Simon says  
  One teacher is Simon.  Simon yells out a command such as, “Simon says, march in place!”  The students would then follow the command because “Simon says” to do it.  If Simon does not use the phrase “Simon says” before stating the command and a child still follows, then that child will be seated and is out of the game until the end of the round.  Play continues with eliminations until one child remains who will become the next Simon.

• I spy with a little eye 
  Get kids to take turns spying out objects or people in the room. You may want to put some props around (e.g. stuffed animals, pictures from Bible lessons from last year etc) or get kids to sit in a circle and spy out each other. E.g. “I spy with my little eye someone wearing a red dress.”

• Blanket game 
  Get all the kids to introduce themselves. Divide class into 2 teams. Hold a large blanket in between. Each team sends a representative to sit in front of the blanket. When blanket is dropped, first side to shout out name of the other wins a point for their team.

2. Lesson

• At Christmas time, some of you had a list of presents that you wanted. Maybe it’s a new Transformers. Or a Barbie doll. Or a truck. Or a book.
• As we enter this new year, what is it that we want? Is it good results? Favour with your parents? Good health? Nice new clothes? A holiday? PSP?
• We all want and need good things in our lives. And God our Father wants to give us good things. He wants to bless us tremendously every day. We just need to look to Him. He is the source of everything.
• Jesus tells His disciples (Matt 6:25-33): DON’T WORRY! 
• Don’t worry about: 
• What you will eat 
• What you will drink
• Your body
• What you will wear

• Jesus gave us 2 examples: 
• Birds of the air: They don’t sow or reap or store, but the Heavenly Father feeds them.
• The flowers of the field: They don’t labour or spin. They are here today and gone tomorrow. Yet God dresses them in more splendour than King Solomon.

• You and I are worth much more to God than the birds and the flowers. 
• God who provides for the birds and the flowers will provide for you and for me. We don’t have to run after all these things like people who don’t know Jesus. 
• Jesus says, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33)
• It’s not because of our own goodness that we deserve all these, but because of Jesus’ goodness, Jesus’ righteousness.

• We are blessed because Jesus was so good. 
• So let’s chase after Jesus instead. Go after His kingdom of righteousness, peace and joy. Recognise and remember that it’s His goodness in us that qualifies for any and every of God’s blessings. Chase Him, worship Him, spend time with Him … because He loves you and wants to spend time with you.
• This year, 2016, let’s not chase after all these things — good results, favour with your parents, teachers and friends, good health, nice new clothes, holidays, PSP etc.
• Let’s look to Jesus and His righteousness in us, and we KNOW that ALL these things will be given to us as well! 
• As we learned in Psalm 23, as the sheep follow the Shepherd, goodness and mercy will follow us all the days of our lives. 
• Chase Jesus, and all these blessings will chase after us!

Christmas: Simeon and Anna meet Jesus 
(Luke 2:22-40)

1. STORY: Simeon and Anna meet Jesus (Luke 2:22-40)

• We’ve learnt of how prophet Isaiah foretold the birth of Jesus, and how shepherds and wise men came to worship Him.
• Shepherds and Wise Men aren’t the only ones who got to meet the baby Jesus and experience the love and power of God face-to-face. There were others.
• The Bible recounts that when Jesus was still a baby, Mary and Joseph took him to the temple in Jerusalem to be dedicated to the Lord, in accordance with Jewish custom.

• Let’s read Luke 2:21-40 together.

2.  LESSON:

• God Promised a Saviour
  • God’s Word teaches us about His promise to send the Savior and how His promises came true.  The Bible gives us the rest of the story of this baby.  Jesus grew up and lived a perfect life obeying God’s laws.  He died on the cross for our sins, was buried and rose again on the third day.  When a person believes by faith that Jesus died in his/her place their sins are forgiven.
  • Just as Simeon had faith that God would keep His promise that he would see the Savior before he died we have faith that what Jesus did to save us from our sins over 2000 years ago is true.  None of us were living when Jesus did this for us.  We believe it even though we didn’t see it. Once we believe by faith that Jesus is our Savior we need to live our lives day by day by faith.  We need to read and obey God’s Word so we can know how to live and trust His promises even when we don’t understand.
• God Promised Jesus will come again
  • Did you know that if you are a follower of Christ, we are waiting for something God has promised but has not happened yet?  God has promised that one day Jesus is going to come back and take all who believe in Him back with Him to heaven.  This is an exciting promise for those who believe in Jesus because at any moment believers could hear the trumpet of God and in a twinkling of an eye go up to meet Jesus in the air and live forever with Him. (1 Thess. 4:13-18)
  • Simeon and Anna both believed that God would send the Savior and waited for Him to keep His promise.  All who believe God’s promise for Jesus’ return believe He will come back one day and are waiting for that promise to come true.  How are you and I going to wait for that promise?
  • Let’s be like Simeon and Anna and live with an attitude of worship and obeying God every day.  Let’s have an attitude of praising Him and thanking Him for all that He has done and will do for us as we believe Him by faith.  (Hebrews 11:13)

Christmas: The wise men bring gifts for Jesus (Matthew 2:1-12)

1. STORY: The wise men bring gifts for Jesus (Matthew 2:1-12)

• Last week we learned about how the angels told the shepherds about the birth of baby Jesus. They brought good news of great joy! And the shepherds went joyfully to welcome the baby.
• Today, we learn about how some people came all the way from far, far away to meet the child Jesus, bringing very special gifts. 

• Let’s read together Matthew 2:1-12 

• Paraphrased version for younger kids:
  Far away in the East, three clever men saw the very same star. The star that God had put in the sky when Jesus was born. They knew it was a sign. A baby king had been born. “He’s here!” they shouted. At dawn, they packed up their camels and wrapped gifts for the baby. They brought their most precious treasures of all: frankincense, gold and myrhh. The three wise men rode their camels, across the endless deserts, up steep mountains, through raging rivers, over grassy plains, night and day, day and night, for hours that turned into day, that turned into weeks, that turned into months and months until at last, they reached … Jerusalem. They went to see King Herod. Surely he’d know where this baby was. But he didn’t. In fact, he didn’t like the sound of a new king — it made him angry. He didn’t want anyone to be king, except him. But Herod’s advisors told the three wise men what was written in their books – what God had said about the baby king. “Go to Bethlehem. That’s where you’ll find him.” Suddenly the star they had seen in the East started moving again, showing them the way, Sure enough, the star led them to baby Jesus. The three men knelt before the little King.

2. LESSON:

• How many wise men came to visit Jesus? Allow kids to answer
• Actually the Bible doesn’t say how many there were. But there were 3 gifts mentioned, so it’s commonly assumed that there were 3 wise men.

• The gifts that the wisemen gave Jesus were not the typical baby gifts, e.g. diapers, milk powder, clothes. In fact, they were very, very strange gifts — gold, frankincense and myrrh.
• These gifts were prophetic in nature. Even though the wisemen may not have realized it then, but the gifts spoke about Jesus’ life and death.
  • Gold: symbol of Kingship — Jesus is KING and GOD
  • Frankincense: used in temple worship — Jesus lived a HOLY and RIGHTEOUS life
  • Myrrh: used to embalm the dead — Jesus was born to DIE for us so that you and I can live! 

• Conclusion:
  • The wisemen brought gifts for Jesus. We all love to receive gifts at Christmas, don’t we?
  • That first Christmas day, we had the biggest and greatest gift in the world! His name was Jesus.
  • Jesus came to die and give us His life. When we have Jesus, we have all that He has to offer — His peace, His love, His joy, His health, His favor, His goodness, His holiness. When we have Jesus, we have everything!
  • This Christmas season, with all the beautiful and wonderful presents we’ve received, let’s take some time to remember that it’s all about Jesus — the best present of all!

3. ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS:

• Related Craft with words “Jesus is the best present of all”
• Game: Pass the parcel with various tasks/rewards and the word JESUS in the present box. You can put cards/bookmarks with the words “Peace”, “Love”, “Joy”, “Health” etc in the various layers, and summarise by saying “When you have Jesus, you have everything”.
